Thriving in the outdoors demands skills that many of us no longer have, such as building a fire or finding enough tree bark to feed your horse. Spark your instincts with this Groupon.
Choose Between Two Options
- $29 for an outdoor photography class in the city (a $69 value)
- $69 for an outdoor photography hike with transportation (a $139 value)
The in-the-city outdoor classes include the chance to capture Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, learn about Long Exposure photography, or Central Park in its springtime glory. Day trips take place from about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and are led by professional photographer Larson Harley, who demonstrates how to capture scenic landscapes. Day trips meet at Eastern Mountain Sports Upper West (Broadway and 76th), the Central Park photography classes meet at Columbus Circle (59th and Central Park West), Long Exposure photography classes meet at Northeast corner of 72nd Street (and Central Park West), and the Brooklyn Bridge classes meet in front of the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory on the Fulton Ferry Landing (intersection between Furman and Old Fulton Street). See the full list of classes and the schedule for more details.
Thinking of the city rarely calls images of fog-ringed mountains and wolf-filled forests to mind, but Discover Outdoors—formerly known as Outdoor Bound—turns these scenes into reality. Owner, avid outdoorsman, and eight-time marathon runner Kirk Reynolds makes sure of it. He and a staff of experts—each a licensed trail guide and Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT—temper the stress of city living with day trips to nearby natural enclaves and weekend camping excursions. The getaways thrill with activities such as hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and horseback riding.
International trips, meanwhile, quench a thirst for life-defining adventures beyond trips to the grocery store during peak Saturday hours. Among them: hikes up famed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, treks to Machu Picchu in Peru, and jaunts through the Canadian Rockies. Some of the journeys even grant travelers the opportunity to fundraise for a worthy cause as they explore.
