Named after the Celtic mother goddess of the land, Danú embodies the traditional music of the Emerald Isle. Lead singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh was raised on an Irish Gaelic-speaking island in County Cork, where she spent her childhood honing her alto pipes through sean-nós, or old-style, songs alongside local vocalists. Muireann propels Danú’s melodies with her full voice and spritely tin whistle while flute solos intertwine with rapid fiddling that melts the bow into poteen. Acoustic guitar, freewheeling accordion, and thumps from the traditional bodhrán drum round out the euphony.

Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts

At Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, The University of Connecticut brings inspired evenings of music and theater to the main stage. Nearly 30 events fill the annual schedule, including comedies, family-friendly performances, and music and dance from all corners of the globe, with special emphasis on jazz and classical luminaries.

Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts

Since opening its doors in 1955, the Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts has attracted music-lovers from across the Northeast. The reason is clear: a Slip 'n Slide in the parking lot, and the center's robust programming, which places special emphasis on dance and classical luminaries, as well as music and dance from all corners of the globe. Itzhak Perlman, Dave Brubeck, and Duke Ellington have all commanded the attention of auditors tucked into more than 2,300 seats. Things get more intimate for the venue's Cabaret Series, which won Connecticut Magazine's Best Cabaret award in 2011 and 2012. During these nights, the space takes on a cozy nightclub ambiance thanks to candlelit tables and a variety of acts, from acclaimed pianists to improv troupes.
