In a Nutshell

Nine-hour downtown NYE blowout features virtual fireworks, midnight countdown, tribute bands, and titanic lineup of hard-rock heroes

The Fine Print

The start of a new year is a special time when everyone comes together to celebrate, leaving you ample time to bury the you-know-what. Let auld acquaintance stay forgot with this GrouponLive deal to see the Downtown Countdown New Year's Eve 2013 with Buckcherry at the Fremont Street Experience. For $16, you get one ticket for general admission on Monday, December 31, at 6 p.m. (up to a $33 value, including all fees). The event ends at 3 a.m.

The year 2012 goes out with a nine-hour explosion of sight and sound as the Glitter Gulch of Fremont Street transforms into a playground of Technicolor revelry. Under the technological marvel of 12.5 million synchronized LED modules known as Viva! Vision, party animals gawk at a sharply pixilated canopy that spans the length of five football fields. The covering projects a fireworks display (synced up to real fireworks in the sky), a heart-tugging 2012 year-in-review retrospective, and a midnight countdown led by Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman. As peripheral visions are bombarded and Mayan calendars are ripped apart like losing horseracing tickets, multiple stages play home to a rowdy soundtrack. Popular local tribute acts pay homage to Elton John, David Bowie, and Def Leppard, and party rockers such as Party Rockers pump out pop tunes by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

Hard-rock fans get their fix of monster riffs and therapeutic aggression release with the dirty Midwestern grunge of Pop Evil and the horseshoe-in-glove punch of local alternative metal merchants Otherwise. Famed '80s hook machine Quiet Riot rallies fans with timeless imperatives such as "Cum on Feel the Noize" and "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)," and prog-metal heroes Queensrÿche add a dose of sonic intellect to the proceedings, connecting the ear bone to the brain bone with hits such as "Silent Lucidity" and tracks from their seminal dystopian concept album Operation: Mindcrime.

The Grammy-nominated tunesmiths of Buckcherry serve as the hell's belles of the New Year’s ball with a headlining set of serrated rock ‘n' roll. Fans can admire the skin ink of singer Josh Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson, a pair first introduced by their tattoo artist, as they soak up selections from Buckcherry's songbook. Its repertoire stretches from heart-rending classics such as “Sorry" to the lewd kiss-off and runaway hit "Crazy B," along with new aural libido from their upcoming album, Confessions. Nelson's licks chug along with stomping crunch as singer Todd howls about the sensations of feeling "lit up" on love and secondhand Bubble Yum.

The Groupon Guide to: Dressing Up Dogs to Make Them Even Cuter

When sweater companies began making sweaters specifically for dogs, the world got a whole lot cuter. Here are some other things you can dress your dog in so that the world we live in remains on top in terms of being cute:

  • Doggy jeans
  • Regular jeans
  • Pieces of jeans attached to dog in random places with masking tape
  • Four coffee cups, one for each paw
  • Shawl that smells kind of like peas probably because it has dried pea soup on it
  • Shoebox with no top so dog can just sit in it
  • Upside-down bread-bowl hat
  • Tiny cane
  • Someone’s hospital wristband
  • Necklace of chicken bones
  • A smaller dog who can remain still for long periods of time so it can form a scarf around a bigger dog's neck
  • Just a man's belt
  • If you've read up until now, you've probably figured out the point of this piece—dogs will look cute no matter what they're wearing as long it's one of the items listed above.

How many dogs can you fit in a coffee cup?
