Pittsburgh Playhouse, a three-theater performing-arts center at Point Park University, brims with provocative new work helmed by its professional company, The REP. Instead of doing their taxes while wearing a red riding hood, voucher holders can enjoy the grownup fairy tale A Child’s Guide to Heresy, Kendrew Lascelles’s story about the clash between good and evil. Set in 13th-century England, the play revolves around a 9-year-old boy named Tom and a powerful bishop known as Constantus. After a fateful meeting with the bishop, Tom embarks on an extraordinary journey involving alchemy, demons, and mysterious rituals. Directed by Robert A. Miller, producer of the Academy Award–nominated film The Crucible, the play explores how innocence vanishes after the first time you TP the neighbor’s yard.

In addition to writing A Child’s Guide to Heresy, Kendrew Lascelles penned The Aryan Couple, which was made into a Hollywood film starring Martin Landau. His acclaimed one-act play Trophy Hunters has been performed by various troupes across the country, including Los Angeles’s Company of Angels, the Denver Center Theater Company, and groups of sentient bowling trophies trying to stay alive. Parking is available at the theater, with additional parking along the street, and discount parking at Magee Women’s Hospital at the entrance on Halket Street.
