Based on the true story of a man with a deforming genetic disorder that made him an outcast in Victorian England, playwright Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man snagged the Tony Award for Best Play after its Broadway debut in 1979. In the surrealistic script, a young doctor discovers the titular character, whose real name is John Merrick, performing as an act in a carnival freak show. The doctor rescues Merrick from the fairgrounds and takes him to his own home, where the misfit sheds light onto his artist’s soul and avoids his cruel former carnival boss. In this Prime Stage Theatre rendition, director Richard Keitel steers the cast through the play’s thematic waters that question traditional notions of what is beautiful, what is ugly, and what is the most visually appealing width of barbed wire to tattoo onto an ankle.

The New Hazlett Theater, built in 1889 as the Carnegie Musical Hall, couples with Johnmichael Bohach’s set design to immerse audiences in the Victorian era. On the Saturday showings—February 25 and March 3—the Prime Stage Theatre hosts Desserts with the Director, in which Richard Keitel shares insights into the play and a collection of celebrity busts hewn from cotton candy.

Although Prime Stage offers discounted rates for seniors and discounted $10 tickets for students, this deal still offers the best deal available for most.
