Donations support distribution of bicycle helmets to children, along with proper helmet fitting and bike-safety information
The Issue: Bicycle-Related Head Injuries and Crashes
Head injury is the most common cause of death in bicycle crashes. Traumatic brain and head injuries occur in one-third of all nonfatal bicycle crashes as well, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Although bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by 65–88 percent when worn correctly, national estimates show that only 15–25 percent of child bicyclists wear them.
The Campaign: Provide Children with Bike Helmets
If this Grassroots campaign raises $135, then Active Transportation Alliance can provide 18 children with bike helmets, along with proper fitting and bike-safety information. Those who choose to donate $25 can receive a premium-level membership, which includes a Chicagoland bicycle map, by registering their donation with Active Transportation Alliance. Each additional $15 raised will be used to give another child a bike helmet and proper helmet fitting.
All donations will be matched by Safe Kids Chicago up to the cost of 75 helmets, or $1,125. You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
