The Issue: Puppy Born without a Paw

Pirelli is a seven-month-old golden-retriever-and-labrador mix who was born without a paw. He currently wears boot-style prosthetics to help him walk and will need several new ones as he grows.

The Campaign: Funding Prosthetic Paw for Pirelli the Puppy

If this Grassroots campaign raises $600, then Canine Assistants can fund a prosthetic boot for Pirelli the puppy. Donations up to $600 dollars will be matched by Mickey's Kids Charitable Foundation. Additionally, an anonymous donor will match donations up to $25,000. With the new foot, Pirelli can visit local schools and serve as a spokesdog to teach children about disabilities. Each additional $10 raised will go toward funding new prosthetics as Pirelli grows up and wears out them out.

Pirelli is on a waiting list so that when he is 1 year old, a veterinarian at North Carolina State University can implant a permanent prosthesis onto his leg bone (not covered by this campaign). Successful surgery will allow the bone to integrate with the implant and move with him when he walks.

Canine Assistants

Jennifer Arnold was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis as a teenager and spent two years in a wheelchair. A local organization at the time trained service dogs to help people in wheelchairs, but it had a long waiting list, so Jennifer and her family went on to spend the next 10 years organizing Canine Assistants to connect people with service dogs.

Canine Assistants trains dogs and places them with recipients that have physical disabilities, seizure disorders, and special needs. The dogs can assist with a variety of everyday tasks, such as turning on lights, opening doors, retrieving dropped objects, and providing companionship. Specially trained seizure-response dogs can also remain next to recipients during episodes and summon help. Canine Assistants also takes trained dogs on educational presentations around the region where they meet with students and people in hospitals to teach about disabilities. A new K-9 kids' reading program aims to motivates children to learn to read by letting them read aloud to the dogs, putting them at ease with a companion from whom they will receive no judgment.

The Groupon Guide to: Living with a Secret

Rarely does a soul get off this planet without seeing or doing a truly terrible thing. Keep it to yourself with these helpful secret-concealing tips:

  • Talk loudly and constantly about everything except the hidden shame that gnaws at your insides like a thousand tiny, chittering bear traps.
  • Distract yourself with activities and spectacles, all the while never addressing the private nightmare that coils around your heart, ever tightening like a boa constrictor suffocating its prey.
  • Try meditation and yoga to silence the warped and twisted version of your own voice that howls behind your eardrums, begging, pleading at every moment to be released by the decency and dignity of confession.
  • Get a pet. Tell them everything. Make sure it is a pet that no one will think twice about if you keep it forever in a cage, like a bird or a gecko. You're trapped in this together now.
  • Consult a doctor about having your mouth sealed over with a cool American-flag sticker—no one questions a patriot.

Why are more and more people having their mouths sealed shut?
