Henry Clay, the 19th century senator, was feared by other politicians for his fiery orations, but celebrated in the arts community for his even fierier clay kiln. Commemorate Clay through clay with today's Groupon: for $29, you get a two-hour glass-fusing or clay-modeling class at MIY Ceramics in Hollywood (a $60 value).
MIY offers open-studio access and an array of glass and ceramics classes geared to both seasoned artists and fledgling finger-painters. While the classes are open to children, they're conceived for adult learners; students can choose the two-hour glass-fusing class (ages 8 and up) to get hands-on experience with regular, fusible, and rainbow-hued dichroic glass, or learn the ways of clay in a two-hour basic pottery class (ages 4 and up). Each participant will bring home a personal clay creation—a vase, bowl, or miniature bust of Spiro Agnew. All materials are provided. Classes are offered 7 p.m.–9 p.m. on Wednesdays and 11 a.m.–1 p.m. on Saturdays. Customers should call to reserve their spots.
Every day, MIY Ceramics' spacious art studio begets a kaleidoscope of one-of-a-kind masterpieces made by students and staffers alike. With a bevy of supplies for crafting pottery, glass pieces, and jewelry, artists of every level can discover a new passion or hone existing skills under the trained guidance of the studio's helpful attendants and in-house Greek muses.
