American commerce expanded exponentially with the introduction of water travel, which is why we still show gratitude to water by throwing pennies into fountains. Be an aquatic ambassador with today's Groupon: for $45, you get two admissions to a stand-up paddleboarding lesson and 75-minute tour down the Indian River from New Smyrna Stand Up in New Smyrna Beach (a $90 value).

New Smyrna Stand Up weaves and winds upright water wanderers downstream along the picturesque Indian River. A 10-minute group orientation led by an experienced instructor imparts the ins and outs of the upright, surf-and-steer sport of paddleboarding, guiding standing sailors through proper foot placement, board control, and appropriate Mark Twain quotes for all occasions. Equipped with a board for standing and a paddle for navigating, newly anointed water walkers spend 75 minutes paddling between the lush banks of the Indian River, stopping only to partake in provided refreshments. Afterward, Smyrna Stand Up emails photos from the tour to participants and also posts the images on its Facebook page, allowing landlocked desk jockeys to cyber-brag of their seafaring skills to spinach-eating sailors everywhere.

About New Smyrna Stand Up

For years, New Smyrna residents have paddled throughout the marshy backwaters of the Indian River lagoon, finding solace among the area's gentle tides, unclouded skies, and abundance of marine life. United by a respect for their natural surroundings and a knack for paddleboarding, a local family joined forces to form the award-winning New Smyrna Stand Up. With dolphins and manatees swimming below and ospreys sailing above, the experienced guides lead tours down the river, journeying out into the ocean when weather permits. In the summer months, the center conducts children's camps, in which youngsters learn paddleboarding techniques while exploring the area's ecosystem. They study local wildlife and marine creatures and learn to identify the origins of passing inner-tubers by the shape of their heads. In addition to tours and camps, the staff offers paddleboard rentals and standup-paddleboard surfing lessons.
