Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic tale of morality and hypocrisy in Puritan New England resonates anew in this stage adaptation, presented by a local theater company whose mission lies in bringing literary masterworks to life. When protagonist Hester Prynne bears a daughter out of wedlock, her colony’s leaders force her to wear a scarlet A on her chest. Hester must go about her daily life displaying the mark, constantly reminded of her adultery and of her losing a childhood spelling bee on a single-letter article. Director Katie Mueller lends her steadying hand to a plot rife with scandal and intrigue, and lead actress Ivy Steinberg infuses Hester with grace, dignity, and courage. Penned by Carol and Jonathan Gilligan, this adaptation veers from the original novel by incorporating the account of Hester’s daughter, Pearl, offering her interpretation of her mother’s struggle to overcome the moral duplicity of her colony’s patriarchy and a giant pilgrim’s hat that blocks the doorway of her home.

Peppered with theatrical treats, the show’s performance schedule includes an opening-night performance from the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony on November 4 and a meet-and-chat with the director and playwright on November 4 and 5. Regardless of the date, audience members will be drawn into a riveting performance in the intimate confines of the New Hazlett Theater, whose recent renovations have succeeded in evicting the ghosts of Puritan forefathers who might object to the play’s nuanced interpretation of their moral integrity.

Though discounts are available for seniors ($15) and students ($10), this Groupon offers the best value for adult and senior tickets.
