Creativity can strike at any moment, whether you're near a canvas and brushes or beside a slumbering strongman and many rolls of toilet paper. Help a youngster learn to recognize opportune moments with today's Groupon: for $20, you get a "Try It Out" painting class for one child (grade K–12) at The Artist Within Studio School in Cypress (an $40 value). Classes take place on the first three Saturdays of the month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and all materials are provided.

Thomas Cleveland harnesses his 34 years of diverse art and design experience to help children explore the creative avenues of their brains. Single-session painting classes introduce youngsters to basic techniques over the course of 2 hours, which is enough time for students to create a finished piece or perm the bristles of one large brush. Cleveland weaves through the 2,000-square-foot studio as budding artists transfer self-selected imagery onto their canvases using their choice of medium. Because classes are small, with just 15–20 pupils, Cleveland can provide ample individual attention and shake everyone's hands at once by dividing up his fingers and toes.

The Artist Within

"I believe art isn't just hanging on the walls—it is all around you in everyday life," says The Artist Within founder Thomas Cleveland. This affinity for art was established when Cleveland was only 5, and it has grown as he has garnered various awards and done commissioned work for Nickelodeon and Coca-Cola. Cleveland helps students develop their own artistic style as they learn pastel-painting techniques in summer camp or use mixed media to illustrate their disdain for yard work.
