  • GO-FAME Youth Theatre Company
GO-FAME Youth Theatre Company started as a means of transporting children to another world. Its first production, Alice in Wonderland, taught 60 students at Minnie Gant Elementary School how to travel down the rabbit hole while providing them with an expressive outlet. With their newfound skills, that cast of first through fifth graders performed for full audiences at the University Theater at CSULB in October 2005. Since then, GO-FAME has expanded into a theatre program for all youth in the community, but its mission remains the same: to encourage youth to explore the arts and expand their skills. When they walk out on stage, students leave behind their old selves and step into the role of performers, and GO-FAME teaches them how. Several weeks of acting lessons and rehearsals preempt annual productions for friends and family. Past performances have included Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Dear Edwina, and The Paper Bag Bandit. • Children Sports International
Despite its worldly name, Children Sports International is fiercely community- focused. Its 100% model ensures that every donated dollar goes toward funding youth-fitness and afterschool-sports programs—and that every staff member is a local volunteer. Founder Danny Vasquez has lived his life in Los Angeles, and he sees sports as a way to inspire hope and improve health among the underserved children in his community. He and his volunteer staff work with kids aged 6–18 to get hearts pumping during age-appropriate activities that enhance physical fitness as they increase self-esteem. However, Children Sports International isn't all about athletics: in 2012, the organization spearheaded the Be the Solution to Ocean Pollution program, during which teams of volunteers and local kids helped beautify their community by cleaning up stretches of Venice Beach and Long Beach. • Working Wardrobes
In 1990, Jerri Rosen and five friends gathered clothing and accessories to give to survivors of domestic violence at an event they called “Day of Self-Esteem.” Rosen and company weren’t prepared for the outpouring of appreciation and the degree to which their single act of kindness would affect the lives of both clients and volunteers. Seeing that there was a true need for professional clothing among women seeking employment, the group went on to serve 67 clients in that first year alone—and Working Wardrobes was born. Eventually, the organization widened its scope to include men and began offering job-placement services and career training programs. Today, Working Wardrobes helps more than 5,000 clients enter the workforce each year. Men and women facing any sort of challenge—alcohol and substance abuse, homelessness, the transition from military to civilian life—can turn to the organization for help. At the 16,500-square-foot facility in Costa Mesa, they’ll find trained personal shoppers as well as regular career training workshops. The long list of awards the group has won includes the 1998 Bank of America Award for Vision in Philanthropy and the 2008 Making a Difference for Women Award from Soroptimist International of Huntington Beach.
