The four stylists who comprise the staff at Platinum Salon pool more than 40 years of combined experience. At the helm is Angela Mekelburg, who graduated from Carsten's Aveda Institute more than a decade ago, before cultivating her skills at various salons and eventually opening up Platinum Salon. There, she and her team cater to clients’ hair needs by cutting, coloring, and rendering straightening treatments. They can also perform extensions for clients looking to sneak into a Victorian photo album.
The skilled stylists at Aida's Skin Care & Hair Salon perform a variety of services to keep client's hair looking its best. Beyond the glamorous cuts and styles, the staff combats frizz with Brazilian-blowout smoothing treatments that eliminate bad hair days for weeks at a time. They also adorn buns with intricate braids, pin curls into gravity-defying up-dos, and add volume and wave to follicles for weddings, proms, and photo shoots.
Like a triple-A baseball player getting called up to the big leagues, Skin Sensations founder Jennifer McRae was asked by EyeQBeauty to take her skills on the road as a master educator. In that capacity, the skilled aesthetician teaches other professionals about eyelashes and brows. At her spa, she practices what she teaches, joining her team of aestheticians to provide one-on-one care to help each client maintain visible, long-term results. To personalize treatments and make them feel like an indulgent experience rather than a chore, the staffers simply takes their time with each visitor. They don't rush clients or use expediencies at the expense of relaxation. They also get to know each client through complimentary skincare consultations, which help them determine the best techniques and treatments for facials and discern the appropriate products and types of wax.
Eleven facials grant patrons the opportunity to experience the aestheticians' above-and-beyond approach to treatments. These range from a simple microdermabrasion to the rejuvenating oxygen facial, which includes a european cleanse, skin analysis, chemical exfoliant, oxygen mask, moisturizer, and botanical, vitamin, mineral, and nutrient extracts. Several add-ons—such as a neck, back, and décolletage massage—are available to render facials more luxurious than a gown patched together with winning lottery tickets. Eyelash extensions, perming, and tinting take the transformation from skin to the eyes, for added definition and an incentive to break up with manual eyelash curlers.
Belle Visage's co-owners, Tina K and Inez Dunst, first met because of vampires. At the time,Tina was the spa's sole owner, powered by a passion for natural skincare that prompted her to get her aesthetician's license before graduating high school. Inez, meanwhile, was a regular, stopping by often for facials with her actress daughter, Kirsten Dunst. Kirsten needed them to revive her skin after hours in the makeup chair for Interview with a Vampire, which she starred in alongside Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
A lot has changed in the more than 10 years since then. Kirsten no longer needs her mom's supervision, and Tina and Inez have become fast friends and business partners. One thing has stayed the same, though, besides vampire's popularity: the spa's star-quality facials. Their most popular one, the Diamond File facial, gently removes the face's dead outer layer of skin, with a file equally effective on sensitive skin and thicker skin types, such as bulletproof skin. As it works, the file helps to break up acne scarring, minimize sunspots, and smooth away fine lines.
Rather than try to offer a slew of skincare treatments, the spa techs at Studio Skin Esthetics specialize in just four. This focus allows them to master each treatment, and offer customized, knowledgeable advice to their clients. The menu starts off with a European facial with exfoliation and extractions and a glycolic peel, which involves peeling away the top layer of skin to remove white heads, dry patches, and fine wrinkles. A microdermabrasion facial also removes the upper layer of dead skin, but this time with tiny diamond chips embedded in a wand. These minuscule diamonds buff away blemishes and dead skin, leaving faces with a polished look. Beyond microdermabrasion are ultrasound facials, which use ultrasonic-ultrasound waves to stimulate collagen, drive active ingredients to the skin, and communicate with any nearby dolphins.
Aesthetician Lana relies on two decades of experience as she helps clients improve the appearance of their skin. For a bright, glowing complexion, Lana reaches for an azulene mask during the moisturizing facial, which helps to lock water back into the pores. A magnetic hydration treatment also moisturizes the skin but instead employs magnetic minerals to increase blood circulation, pull hydration to the surface, and lets you put extra photos from the fridge on your cheeks. To achieve glowing skin from within, Lana uses Kangen water, which aims to tone the skin by restoring the body to a proper pH balance. She renders all these skin-refreshing services amid a comforting private treatment room with hardwood floors, soft pinkish walls, flowing curtains, and relaxing candles.
