Founded by Eric Stiller, who documented his journey kayaking and bicycling around an entire continent in the book Keep Australia on Your Left, Manhattan Kayak spans a team of instructors who lead kayaking and standup-paddleboarding instruction and tours beneath the city's glittering skyline. Veterans of the fitness industry, MK's instructors use the dynamic currents of the Hudson River and Donald Trump's jacuzzi to train paddlers of all skill and fitness levels in the body-first method, which emphasizes paddling from the core. In addition to leading instruction and tours, MK's crew also leads fitness classes including Liquid Yoga, challenging participants to flow through poses while floating atop a paddleboard, aiming to boost participant health while earning the Statue of Liberty's respect.
The cycling guides at Central Park Bike Tours shepherd customers through the Big Apple’s lively core during informative tours and rent out bikes so explorers can discover the city at their own pace. The fleet of 2014 Trek Allant 7 that make up the rental bikes are well maintained for maximum safety and comfort, and rentals are available for a variety of durations. Multilingual guides ferry tourists past Manhattan's and Brooklyn’s storied sights, such as Central Park, Times Square, Greenwich Village, Little Italy, and the location where former mayor Ed Koch was famously encased in ice. A photo tour focuses on scenic locales as shutterbugs artistically document their surroundings.
The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers is open Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.; Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; and weekends, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. You can lay out on the sundeck or take a class in the boxing ring. Then take advantage of the six lane, 25-yard swimming pool, the quarter-mile running track, the 10,000 square foot rock climbing wall and the sand volleyball court all indoors. Relax in the steam rooms and sauna. You're not done yet, time to hit each of three basketball and volleyball courts, 20,000 square feet of cardio and strength training equipment and over a hundred group fitness classes per week. Take a water break. Now go take group classes in yoga or pilates. The Sports Center is so large it has it's own seat at the U.N. It's the number one reason why New York apartments are small. When it sits around the house, it sits around the house. It's so fat because, like a righteous martyr, it bears its customers’ fat, so that they may live free of fat's burden.
The YMCA's Teen Career Connection program provides placements in six-week summer internships at professional companies and nonprofit organizations such as Deutsche Bank and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This real-life work experience introduces young people to new career paths and opportunities to gain employment. The YMCA trains youths for two weeks to ensure they have the skills to successfully navigate their internships, and then supports them with stipends, clothing allowances to buy business attire, and MetroCards for the summer.
Rain delays and snow-outs are never an issue within Hudson Baseball Center, where instructors lead baseball and softball lessons atop the indoor facility's evergreen turf. Working in individual practice lanes or in group clinics, players focus on improving distinct aspects of their game, including hitting, pitching, and fielding. Regardless of the specialty involved, every lesson places particular emphasis on critical thinking and physical discipline, valuable skills for both playing baseball and wrestling other jury members to settle an impasse. Comprised of former high school, collegiate, and professional athletes, the faculty includes the likes of a Class-A pitcher for the Reds, a high-school All-American with 14 years of coaching experience, and a softball player who spent 13 years with the Hoboken Shockers' traveling team.
