Food Haus Cafe, Los Angeles

If it weren't for Food Haus Cafe, newspapermen would have packed up their inkwells and visors years ago. Nearly every dish at the gourmet-comfort-food hotspot arrives on yesterday's edition, and for good reason. Like any good comfort food, the entrees at Food Haus Cafe are messy. Take the restaurant's signature breakfast boats for example—the veritable canoes of baked bread spill over with avocado, pico de gallo, and fried eggs. Even the french onion soup's crock can't contain it alone. The newspapers play host to everything from goat cheese and truffle flatbread pizzas to the cafe's crown jewel, the bleu burger, which is piled high with jalapeños, bacon, and tempura-battered onions.

But folks who can't stand the site of newspapers, or just watched too much Citizen Kane growing up, might enjoy the shop's craft lemonades. The rotating selection has included thirst-trouncing flavors such as the Dirty Stacy with pineapples, mangoes, and peaches, or the Purple Kelley infused with blueberry jam.
