About Patriot Ice Center

Fans of figure skater Johnny Weir find the Patriot Ice Center to be a hallowed ground—the center, which is also home to the Diamond State Curling Club, served as a training base prior to Weir's two-time Olympic run. But this icy arena hosts winter athletes of all abilities on its two rinks, one Olympic-sized and one built to NHL-specifications. In-house youth programs like the Delaware Ducks and Delaware Patriots carve the ice between the all-ages "Stick & Puck" hockey slots. While recreationists practice gliding during open skate, competitive skaters team up with personal training specialists for off-ice conditioning. Training in both sports is offered year-round through the onsite skating academy, hockey clinics, and summer camps.

Off the ice, a well-stocked pro shop provides top-of-the-line gear and equipment repairs. The DelMar Cafe serves hot drinks and snacks, like buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks, as well as entree-size portions like pulled pork sandwiches and burgers. Fingers foods and frosty fun make the Patriot Ice Center a smart choice for group gatherings like birthday parties and community events.

We love ice skating at the Patriot Ice Center. The staff was friendly and organized especially at check in with the scan process for temperature before admission. We bought wings from the snack counter and they were pretty good. I hope to return when another open skate is offered.

I spent the first half hour trying to figure out why my skates felt terrible and after asking for another pair, was told that they didn't have a great selection of women's size 8 and I had happened to get the pair that was a mix of 8 and 8 1/2 size. That definitely made a difference! Meanwhile, the ice arena was overrun with unsupervised children who are part of the adjoining hockey league. They were following no safety protocols, tearing up the ice (which was never smoothed for public skate) throwing gloves around on the ice with no regard for other skaters. Parents completely ignored them and there was no staff supervision. I also think I accidentally left my pair of gloves there, but when I called back they were not located by staff in the lost and found. Staff were friendly and did allow me to keep my bag with my shoes behind the desk for safety, but there were not enough staff present and the crowd of kids was rough.

Extremely disappointed in our visit. My 2 grandchildren used to go there at least twice a week for lessons and skating practice. On the recent day we went, there was an unsupervised group of about a dozen young boys (from a hockey team) running around in front of the bleachers, with hockey skates on. They were running, yelling, bumping into other children and adults. They were waving their hockey sticks around in the air at each other. Being a retired elementary teacher, I had no qualms asking them to calm down. After doing this a couple of times, I gave up. What chaos! I won't be going back again. We'll use the UD facility.
