What You’ll Do
Mother Nature doesn’t want anyone to go hungry. Neither does Kevin Feinstein. Over the course of two hours, the foraging expert and food author expands groups’ pantries by guiding them across half an acre of part-wild Lafayette land, pointing out the edibles growing up from the ground.
This is an outdoor experience, so attendees should dress for the weather. Maybe hit the restroom, too—the closest bathrooms during the tour are at least half a mile away.
Seek Out Colorful Comestibles
While any forager’s prospective haul varies by location, season, and even day, edibles identified on this trip might include crimson autumn berries, tie-dye passionflower, or inky indigo sunberries.
Observe Sustainability in Action
The area explored on this tour is a great example of permaculture—land that largely regulates and maintains its own diverse ecosystem.
Note: Though students can take plenty of photos and notes, actual foraging is is prohibited on public lands, so berries should stay on the vine.

He may not wear a cape, but Kevin Feinstein has tasked himself with the superhuman feat of solving the earth’s food crisis—work for which he’s earned attention from Time, the Wall Street Journal, and the Travel Channel’s The Wild Within. His methodology focuses on one sustainable bite at a time, teaching individuals to be self-sufficient instead of relying on corporations for their nutrition. To these ends, Kevin has led hundreds of food walks and authored books such as The Bay Area Forager, Crash Course in Wild Mushroom Foraging, and the upcoming Practically Wild.
