The Scouting Report

The Mercury were basically unstoppable last season, posting a 29–5 record en route to their third WNBA title. All-star center Brittney Griner was the driving force behind the team’s success, especially on defense, where she constantly swatted away balls that were headed toward the hoop or any tower of champagne glasses nearby. In fact, Griner set a single-season record for blocked shots in 2014, helping her become the first player in Mercury history to win WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. This summer, Griner, Candice Dupree, and the rest of the talented Mercury roster will continue to defend their crown during home games against San Antonio and Tulsa.

Phoenix Mercury

As one of the WNBA's eight charter franchises, the Phoenix Mercury have brought some of the league's biggest stars to the valley over the years. In 2004, the Mercury selected Diana Taurasi with the first overall pick. Two years later, they snagged Cappie Pondexter. Those two selections paid huge dividends in 2007 as the team claimed its first-ever WNBA championship. But perhaps the Mercury's biggest acquisition didn't come until April 2013, when they selected Baylor University's Brittney Griner. Like with Taurasi and Pondexter before her, the Mercury figure to lean on Griner for years to come in hopes of capturing more WNBA titles.
