Product Runway 2015: True Colours
At True Colours, you’ll see models strutting down a 150-foot runway in the usual resplendent materials of a fashion show: silk, cashmere, etc. But you might also see clothing made out of wood. That’s because the artists behind this annual event aren’t fashion designers at all. Rather, they’re architects and interior designers, tasked with translating their own visions into wearable works of art. Sourcing materials from their various disciplines, the designers use everything from tile to carpet and glass to create a sort of avant-garde couture.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a fashion show without a little competition. In the same fashion as Project Runway, models pause in front of a panel of judges, who then evaluate their ensembles. This year’s adjudicators include Jared Lang (founder of Fashion Houston), Jeff Fremillion (founding editor-in-chief of Houston Magazine), Michelle Maresh (publisher of Houston Design Resources Magazine), and Alex Chapman (fashion design professor at Houston Community College). At the end of the evening, proceeds go to Houston Furniture Bank, a non-profit that furnishes empty homes for Houston-area families in need.
Bayou Music Center
Part arena, part club, and all about the music, Bayou Music Center has catered to listeners of all tastes since it opened in 1997. James Brown, Steely Dan, Nickelback, and Etta James have all graced the spacious stage, drawn to its dazzling light displays and high-tech audio equipment. The facility also has various bars throughout, from an industrial taproom with corrugated steel walls to a lounge with neon drapery, oriental rugs, and cushy sofas.
