La Popular Tamale House
Whether stuffing cornhusks with hand-ground maize or hosting holiday meals for the hungry, the Moreno family radiates the spirit of giving, earning kudos from the Dallas Observer and the East Dallas community. Since 1984, the clan has welcomed visitors to La Popular with warmth, hospitality, and their lauded tamales. Made without lard or gluten, each hoja-wrapped tamale brims with hearty fillings such as pork, chicken breast, ground chuck, and spiced pinto beans. The Morenos gather many ingredients from the Dallas Famers Market, where they also prepare savory bites for passersby. On weekends, the flagship location serves Mexican classics such as slow-roasted barbacoa beef, gluten-free and vegan options, fried pork feet, and carnitas as tender as a love poem's first kiss.

“My main suggestion is that they allow a la carte or add-on options to the menu for a bit of flexibility. It should be simple to add a taco to my tamale plate for $1.50 or $2. When asked, they couldn't even accomodate by allowing me to add a couple of dollars to my total. What I have had there is delicious, though. Will still probably return frequently. Maybe I'll order the taco plate next time. :-)”
“They are awesome! They opened early for me and the food is fantastic ”
“The food was fantastic! I loved too the traditional Mexican Popsicles!”
