Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto has a new Italian hideaway. Anyone retreating to Nico's Hideaway can sort of choose their own adventure. Date night? Reserve a private booth in the Italian restaurant's dark, moody dining room. Game night? Debate the Giants' prospects with the bartender as they pour you a beer under the flat-screen TV. Night out with some out-of-towners? Snag a seat on the patio, where you'll find top-notch views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the person sitting next to you.
Whichever adventure you choose, there's a meal to match. Couples can share oysters and sturgeon caviar before getting entangled with plates of linguine with clams. There are plenty of bar snacks, too, though, including parmesan wings and charcuterie plates. And brunch is perhaps best reserved for the patio, where an order of crab cakes benedict is made better only by a mimosa and a side of sunshine.
