Students begin their PADI open-water diver certification course by scheduling the pool sessions, open-water dives, and picking up the home study materials. The home study involves reading a book and watching a video (optional online course available at an additional cost) is done first. Next students schedule the orientation and class session at Pinnacles Dive Center. Students learn all the skills necessary to become safe, comfortable, and prepared for open-water dives. Use of the scuba kits for the pool session is included. The open-water dives follow the pool session. Meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday for two dives and finish on Sunday with two more dives to earn certification. The dives are normally done in Monterey or on the North Coast and students will need to arrange their own transportation.
All participants must provide or purchase their own scuba quality mask, fins, snorkel, and boots. Students receive a 10% discount for dive-shop purchases. Although not recommended, personal equipment may be rented for an additional charge for both pool and ocean dives. For the open water dive weekend, student equipment rental is an additional $129 dollars, or students may provide or purchase their own gear. Rental equipment can be picked up the Thursday afternoon or Friday before the dive weekend and must be returned the following Monday.
