The Heckscher Museum of Art

Founded in 1920 by the German American industrialist August Heckscher, The Heckscher Museum of Art aims to educate, inspire, and enrich the residents of Huntington and the surrounding communities. Citing the "inherent civic value of publicly accessible art," the museum combines its permanent collection, rotating exhibits, and educational programs into a full palette that encourages a broader understanding of both local history and international art movements.

  • Size: more than 2,500 pieces by American and European artists, in addition to the 185 works originally contributed by Heckscher
  • Crown Jewel: Eclipse of the Sun, a 1926 painting by George Grosz (who once taught at the museum) that's considered among the most important artworks of the 20th century
  • Hands-On Experiments: Professional museum educators conduct several grade-specific programs designed to complement existing curriculums with lessons in appreciating art beyond the standard theoretical physics of canvas-stretching
  • While You're in the Neighborhood: Three miles from the museum lies one of its best exhibits, the Arthur Dove/Helen Torr Cottage, where the titular artists used the surroundings of Titus Mill Pond to inspire their paintings, sketches, and color studies
