When Martha Millan says, "Beauty shouldn't hurt," she's not peddling a slogan—her first job in the beauty industry literally caused her pain. Working at an upscale salon, her exposure to common hair and makeup products triggered hives and headaches. While searching for more natural goods for personal use, her research revealed unsettling truths about many industry product lines that often use irritating perfumes to mask the underlying odors of harsh chemicals. Feeling that everyone should have the opportunity to look beautiful without fear of harming health, she bought a salon and transformed it into Salon O Day Spa.
Amid Salon O Day's industrial decor, Millan and her team of stylists, aestheticians, and a massage therapist use products so natural that some are even edible, though Millan imagines the taste would leave something to be desired: barbecue sauce. Among the array of certified-organic, not-tested-on-animals, gluten- and chemical-free products, Millan's favorites include Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare, developed by an American physician who advocates against overexfoliation. For hair, stylists use products from lines including Surface Hair and Organic Color Systems, and during nail services, technicians use natural products from SpaRitual in tandem with scrubs made in-house from ingredients bought at a local co-op.
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
I have had Fibromyalgia for over 20 yrs now and massage therapy has been the biggest factor in managing
this condition. I know chronic pain and I know how to treat it
with Massage. Let me help you find the keys to an active, happy, and full life once again.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
My business partner and I started this business right after graduating from The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School and Clinic. I am a former EMT with a great desire to help others and years of knowledge and experience in the health industry.
What do you love most about your job?
I have always been fascinated by the human body and the connection between mind, body and spirit. With massage therapy, I am able to touch all three and heal with my very own hands. I am very familiar with pain, anxiety and depression. So,
I have compassion and understanding for my clients' needs.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
I once had a client tell me that she wondered if I prayed before her massage because she felt "healing energy" and her pain was completely gone. I loved this feedback because she not only felt pain-free; she felt the dramatic upswing in her spirit.
This result is my goal for all massages I perform.
Four Things about Austin Orthodontic Specialists
For more than two decades, Dr. Michael Dillingham has helped children, teens, and adults attain healthier, more confident smiles. Furthermore, both he and his staff keep pace with the latest treatment technologies through ongoing training and participation with organizations such as the American Association of Orthodontics. Read on to learn more about their approach:
They look both above and beneath the teeth. Assessing orthodontic health requires understanding what’s happening below the gumline as much as what’s happening above. Using digital x-ray imaging, Dr. Dillingham can show and explain each patient’s unique issues.
They specialize in multiple treatment options. By mastering a range of orthodontic treatments, Dr. Dillingham and his team can offer a range options, from traditional braces to Invisalign, so patients can identify their best options.
They’re experts in the Damon System. This new type of treatment not only straightens teeth, but can also enhance structural features of the face for a more prominent smile. Even better, it typically requires no tooth extractions or other forms of oral surgery.
They’ll walk you through financial options. Orthodontics often requires a substantial investment. The staff helps patients understand insurance coverages, as well as financing options such as payment plans.
Organic and natural products—that's all you're going to find at Salon O Organic Day Spa. So when you're relaxing under the skilled hands of a massage therapist or hairstylist, you don't need to worry about whether the products they're using contain any harmful toxins, or if they'll transform you into the Incredible Hulk. At Salon O, the staff is just as committed to helping clients make healthier life choices as they are to helping them look their best. Here are a few ways they do both:
Hair color: Imagine renewing your 'do without the harsh smell of ammonia. That's an everyday occurrence at Salon O, where the gentle color products not only change hues, but also maintain moisture and protein levels.
Organic spray tan: Paraben-and-artificial-preservative-free air-brush tanner provides a safer and healthier way to attain a sun-kissed look.
Hot-stone massage: Aromatic oils calm the mind, and heated river rocks augment the healing power of Oriental massage. Throughout the whole experience, therapists use shea butter to soften the entire body.
