Q&A with Tommy, Coach Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? We give people free Bat City branded swag and permanent discounts just for having good attendance at no extra cost. For example, six workouts earns one koozie; 15 workouts earns one water bottle; and 21 workouts earns a free t-shirt. If you hit large milestones like 100 workouts, we give you a permanent discount of 10% off and your picture on the wall of fame. We put every single athlete's personal record on the board so they can see themselves constantly getting stronger and faster. It also helps coaches to know exactly what each athlete's stats are. Workouts are constantly varied—but not random—and focused on getting stronger and faster in a safe environment. We also give people free membership to Beyond the Whiteboard so they can track their workouts. Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy? CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. Safety is our number one rule. You start by learning technique, then you gain consistency, and then you can apply intensity. It's not always easy to go to a large, faceless gym by yourself with no coach to build a program that's right for you. While one or two coaches runs each class, participants support and root for each other. The last person to finish a workout is just as important as the first person to finish a workout. You can compete against each other, or you can just compete against yourself. Everything is scalable, and we have athletes of all ages and fitness levels. Also, everything is measurable, so you'll see yourself getting better every day.

We believe everyone is an athlete, and welcome all skill levels. Q&A with Athan, Owner, Head Coach, and Trainer Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? The best thing about Fortitude are the workouts. They incorporate key principles from CrossFit, keeping them constantly varied, but also challenging the athlete to push themselves mentally and physically. We create a friendly and supportive atmosphere so that even tough workouts make you feel successful and accomplished, leaving you ready to take on anything that comes up in life. What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own? When people workout on their own, they often have a difficult time really challenging themselves and seeing the results they are hoping for. With the right fitness program, you can exercise, have a life, and see the progress you want for your body. Plus, having a group environment helps to keep up your morale and encourages you to show up, because you feel accountable to the friends you make at the gym. Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts? Music is really important when you workout. And everyone in Austin has an opinion about music. That's why we take requests from our athletes and build workout playlists from their suggestions. We're all about giving you the best workout possible and the best environment to do it in.

  • Capoeira Evolução
Capoeira is part martial art, part dance, and part music lesson—also making it a great workout. During classes, the highly accomplished Mestre Rodrigo Zerlotti gathers his students into a circle where they sing and play musical instruments to help set the speed of the showdown happening in the middle. There, two capoeiristas show off their moves, often demonstrating scything kicks or unexpected takedowns. They also incorporate tumbling and acrobatics into their combative dancing, which they use to dodge their opponent's attacks or deflect invitations to start a conga line. Mestre Rodrigo started his capoeira practice at age 13 in Brazil. A devoted practitioner throughout his life, he moved to Texas in 1990 and began putting down the roots for Capoeira Evolução before achieving the mestre (master) level in 1996. Today he continues to train contramestres (apprentices) of the art and teaches his beloved capoeira to the local community.

  • Capital City Strength & Conditioning
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? Our community of members is incredible! Everyone is encouraging and motivating. It is obvious that our coaches are passionate about what they do. Helping people get better is something they genuinely love! Couple that with great workouts and a clean, welcoming facility and we're unstoppable. Exercise is challenging. How do you keep clients motivated and engaged? Our coaches are always doing one of two things: they are either coaching or encouraging. All of our coaches understand that we set the atmosphere and the energy level on the floor. If we're not excited about the workout, no one will be! Loud music and constant encouragement is a great mix! What was the inspiration to start or run this business? The dream of Capital City Strength & Conditioning has been alive and growing for almost a decade now. Fitness has changed the lives of each of the owners and they were inspired to bring that same change and "can do" attitude to their community. What do you love most about your job? Seeing people achieve things they never thought they would be able to do. The look on the face of the 38 year old soccer mom who has never done a pull-up in her life, getting her first strict pull-up. The couple who has lost over 100 lbs combined. This is what we love.
