Having dissolved thousands of doses of tattoo ink, Dr. Phil Knall has worked his way up to educating fellow clinicians on the technique. He's presented at more than 800 industry seminars in six countries.
Dr. Knall employs the Zimmer Cyro 6 laser, which vanishes tattoos over the course of a few treatments. Comfort is key; unlike many traditional cooling methods, such as ice-cream wrestling, the Zimmer's cooling system continuously chills the skin before, during, and after the procedure. See the clinic's gallery for evidence of the doctor's disappearing acts.
The telltale buzzing of tattoo guns pervades the air at Alley Kat Tattoo’s studio, where skilled artists have emblazoned skin with Celtic symbols, graffiti, military insignias, and mythological art for nearly two decades. The artists eschew pretension in favor of a casual, hygienic environment that makes even first-timers feel like habitual inkers as they excitedly convey their ideas during consultations. When they aren’t putting their spin on classic designs such as dragons and portraits of Grover Cleveland, the artists accent eye areas and lips with subtle cosmetic tattoos that act as permanent makeup.

The first tattoos ever created at Love and Hate Tattoo Parlor are nearly antiques by now—the shop’s been open since 1975. That longevity is due in large part to the staff, who revels in creating totally custom works of art, from elaborate, Day Glo–bright sleeves to masterfully shaded black-and-white pieces. Each inkmaster has a signature style: one co-owner, Danny Ross, specializes in multichromatic pop-culture pieces that could’ve been lifted directly from a modern comic book, while another co-owner, Meg McNeil, loves the bold lines and time-honored symbolism of traditional designs.
The shop’s piercers go way beyond the basics, too, adorning just about any part of the body with gemstones and rings while keeping their work areas impeccably sterile and magpie-free. Both kinds of body-mod pros regularly take home top honors at competitions during festivals and expos.

At ThINK Pure Skin, the team of Lavish Lash Company-trained technicians doll up peepers with semi-permanent mink eyelash extensions. They don’t just stick them on there and call it a day, though. With more than 15+ years experience, they skillfully attach each lightweight strand to a client’s natural lashes individually using FDA-approved adhesive, creating a fuller, longer look that eschews the need for mascara for weeks.
Once lashes settle after the two-hour customized treatment, clients can sweat, swim, or continue to foolishly smell that one clown’s flower without worry.
