Each one of Fentress CrossFit's certified trainers shares a passion for athletics that he or she has developed over decades of experience in the fields of weightlifting, running, and nutrition. They use this passion and energy to help pupils exceed personal fitness goals with supportive group classes and one-on-one training sessions. Though CrossFit workouts are short⎯often only 20 minutes⎯the high-intensity circuits demand mental and physical exertion from students, rewarding them with newfound strength, greater endurance, and muscles yet to be discovered by science. Trainers make sure bodies don't bore themselves with machines and treadmills, but rather remain engaged with ever-changing workouts of the day that employ functional movements, including lifting objects, jumping rope, rowing, and climbing.
Surrounded by warm, salt water, Miss Mimi smiles as her young student lets go of the side of the pool and swims to her for the very first time. Known as the Swim Whisperer, Miss Mimi prides herself on helping young children and adults overcome their fear of water and learn to swim with the confidence of a derby-winning seahorse. An avid swimmer with more than 21 years of teaching experience, Mimi opened Aqua~Fit in 2008 with the hopes of creating a health center for the entire family. To offer something for guests of all ages, she designed an entire program of swimming lessons, aquatic fitness , and land fitness classes, with programs for all skill levels.
Following the CrossFit ethos, CrossFit Chesapeake's instructors design high-intensity workouts that build strong, resilient bodies. Depending on their fitness levels, participants may begin the gym's muscle-manufacturing process with exercises that use only their body weight, such as squats, pushups, and tonguestands. As tone and technique improve, trainers tack on tonnage with sonorous dumbbells and hissing kettle bars, as well as with plyometric boxes and medicine balls. Cardio blasters such as rowing, running, and rope jumping also enliven workouts.
At CrossFit Callused, calluses are badges of honor. They're outward evidence of the muscular strength and grit the gym's members work to improve during each Workout of the Day (WOD). These daily workouts feature an ever-changing mix of exercises that draws from diverse areas such as gymnastics, powerlifting, and calisthenics. Members practice movements that they'll encounter everywhere in life—such as pushing, pulling, squatting, jumping, and carrying heavy objects—making it an ideal program for folks wherever they might fall on the age and fitness spectrums.
