A Conversation with Lillian, Owner of Lillian Dion Salon What is your salon's most popular service or treatment? Most people come to take advantage of our skill in keeping the hair healthy, strong, growing, and beautiful. Do you or your staff have any special certifications or training? What makes you and your team experts? Everyone is a certified hair stylist. [We are] experts at creating innovative looks and meeting the customer's standards in beauty. What makes your business stand out from the competition? Not only do we focus on doing hair, but we [also] focus on doing make-up, facials, eye brows, and more to meet the customer's needs. What keeps customers coming back? Our customer experience, advanced hair knowledge, our innovative skills, and our location. What's the vibe of your salon like? We are [a] fun and outgoing team. No hassle, but a lot of relaxing and great personalities. Why is Black History Month important to you? It celebrates our achievements and honors our ancestors. It gives us an opportunity to reference our long struggle to achieve peace, overcome oppression, and become a stronger community. What does being a black business owner mean to you? It means that as a people we have come a long way in America. And there are a lot of hurdles to jump, [but] having jumped this one makes me glad.

  • Karen Marie Salon
The Press Box: Karen Marie Salon When stylist Karen Marie Vanoni—who's trained with L'Oreal, Vidal Sassoon, and Toni & Guy—decided to open her own salon, she already had her skillset down pat. That meant she could focus on finding a space to act as an eco-friendly retreat for her clients. She found it in Bucktown, where exposed-brick walls surround styling stations made from reclaimed wood from barns torn down in Wisconsin. Other refurbishment touches include moulding taken from a redesigned Logan Square home and a 1950s court bench in the reception area. And while recycled furniture is an easy step in being green, the salon also runs on wind-farm electricity, uses low-flow sinks that reduce water usage by 50%, and composts its coffee grounds into mulch for the garden. These reduce-reuse-recycle techniques have gotten it lots of attention. Read on to see what the press says: "A haven of rejuvenation in Chicago, Karen Marie Salon proves that sustainibility can be seriously chic." — American Salon "Karen Marie Vanoni's passion for hair is surpassed only by her commitment to the environment." — Modern Luxury CS magazine, naming it the Best Green Salon of 2015 "I … have gone back regularly over the past couple years because the service is great, I get compliments on my hair all the time, and they’ve enlightened me to the fact that a hot towel on my face is pretty damn soothing." — Chicagoist, naming it one of The Five Best Places For A Man To Get A Shave And/Or A Haircut In Chicago "The salon uses and carries Kevin Murphy and Aveda products, as both lines utilize pure plant extracts and essential oils." — Industrie

  • K.c. Karen Hill @tsubo Salon
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? We have highly trained and experienced stylists! I personally have trained with some great celebrity hairstylist that are Vidal Sassoon based in theory. Education in our Salon is a continual process through Kevin Murphy and L'anza. I have an incredible eye for line, shape, and style. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I needed a business that allowed a creative outlet and doing hair was just what the doctor ordered. I love making people look great, and doing hair is literally like playing with clay. Also, I am very good with people. I was also inspired by line, shape, and texture. I'm very good in visual arts. What do you love most about your job? I love making people happy. There is nothing better than seeing someone smile when you know you have relieved them of some hardship in their life or made them look incredible for an event. I love working with my hands as well, I find it very relaxing. Doing hair is a living visual art. What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? I think the best feed back I've gotten has been from cancer patients because not only was I doing their hair, BUT rather helping them keep their dignity but also being a friend, and advocate. On the other hand, I've had great praise from the millennial generation for my Ombre/balayage!
