  • Huntington Learning Centers
In 1977, career educators Eileen and Raymond Huntington opened the first Huntington Learning Center in Oradell, New Jersey. Their mission to give every child the best education possible is still going strong. They use an individualized approach to education, adjusting instructional tactics according to each student’s particular needs. Due to their success in helping K–12 students prepare for exams and improve grades and study skills, there are currently 260 Huntington franchises open nationwide. The certified Huntington tutoring staff utilizes testing and rubrics for assessing each child’s skills, academic needs and potential for growth. Tutors note student response to different testing and academic situations to craft a methodology sensitive to each child’s learning style. Teachers adhere to the company’s code of ethics that stresses professionalism and confidentiality, encouraging students to improve grades honestly through dedicated study rather than shortcuts.

  • A Love for Learning
Jillian Saldana was having trouble finding educational programs that engaged her two children, one of whom has ADHD. As a teacher herself for more than 10 years, she knew there had to be a way to both teach and inspire students. So, she founded A Love of Learning to give kids an outlet to achieve their personal learning goals while enjoying themselves. Along with a team of professional teachers and tutors, she runs in-home tutoring and academic enrichment programs for kids. During these sessions, students can bone up on their math and science or prepare for the SAT. Workshops for kids aged 3 and older introduce creative writing, scientific experiments, Spanish-language skills, and Lego robotics lessons.

  • Arete Music Academy
In bright, sunny studios of Areté Music Academy, pupils take part in intensive curricula taught by professional musicians, discovering their abilities and dreaming of their futures. The school culls its faculty members from schools including the Juilliard and Yale. Students—as young as ages two or as old as a cave painting of a drum set—take part in specialized courses and camps. Private and group programs focus on topics such as a particular composer, an instrument, or a specific genre. Performance opportunities abound, too, in the concerts and ensembles fostered by the school.

  • Fairleigh Dickinson University
TGA of Bergen County's coaches know golf and tennis, but above all else, they know kids. The highly trained pros and education experts have teamed up to design age-specific golf and tennis programs that not only teach children the rules of the game but also instill valuable life lessons, education, and a love for physical fitness. A proud USTA National Partner, the TGA develops its methodologies and curriculum in conjunction with the USTA's youth tennis standards. As children swing clubs and rackets, the instructors stress playing fair and developing self-confidence through success, giving them positive motivation and praise after they sink a tricky putt or hit a winner on the tennis court. The classes are interspersed with academic lessons on subjects such as math, science, and history, and of course, a healthy dose of fun. Whether the prescreened and certified instructors are leading kids in a summer camp or after-school program, they provide all the clubs, rackets, balls, and robo-caddies needed.

  • Sylvan Learning Teaneck
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews. Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. After-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.
