  • East End Seaport Museum
East End Seaport Museum specializes in local history and maritime mysteries. One mystery that has long plagued locals is how the restored local lighthouse earned the nickname "Bug Light." In a room dedicated to the landmark, the museum has the answer: originally built in 1870, the lighthouse rests on screw piles; when the tide was out, it looked like a giant water bug. Case closed. Here are some other revelations the museum has in store: Size: Four permanent history exhibits, flanked by a host of experiential extras. Eye Catcher: the 750-gallon saltwater aquarium, alive with local sea creatures. Fish are a part of maritime history, too, and not just because they carry all of our boats on their backs. Permanent Exhibits: the blacksmith shop. Inside the rustic, shack-like building—a replica of an 1870s one—weekend visitors find a real blacksmith at work on a real forge. Sparks literally fly. Don't Miss: the narrated lighthouse cruises of the area, which has a higher density of lighthouses than anywhere else in the US. It gets visitors out on the water, amidst brisk sea breezes even the best museum's air conditioning can't re-create.
