While not exactly synonymous, hip-hop and martial arts have been at least nodding acquaintances since GZA released Liquid Swords. But even The Genius never thought to use his rhymes to get into sword-slinging shape. That’s where Hip + Fit comes in. There, a born-and-raised Brooklynite blends her martial arts training and hip-hop background into her cardio kickboxing class. She boasts a black belt in martial arts, performs as a rapper in her spare time, and during her evening classes, she draws on her dual passions to tone muscles and burn fat to the beat of her favorite hip-hop beats. Sessions aim to improve balance and flexibility, with lesson on proper technique in punching, kicking, and demanding a juice box.

The founder of Invest In Your Body describes the program as a place for transformation. Your fitness level and experience don't matter, our only requirement is the desire to improve; rather, the trainers welcome anyone ready to make a commitment and encourage others in the community. They provide members with all of the exercises on any given day, using everything from TRX suspension harnesses and kettlebells to good old-fashioned crunches, which were once the only way to break out of a corset. Mostly, though, they provide motivation, whether in the form of upbeat music or modifications and encouragement.
"I am on a quest to create super-humans out of mere mortals,” declares Justin Cotler, owner of Crossfit Dynamix. He doesn’t earn a living by simply painting capital s’s on unitards; instead, he helps athletes soar to new fitness plateaus inside a brick-lined gym filled with medicine balls, heavy ropes, and giant tires.
Backed by a staff of certified CrossFit coaches, he motivates clients to run faster during sprinting drills and add spring to their steps during challenging plyometrics. Olympic lifting moves such as rack jerks and push presses strengthen the upper body more effectively than hoisting one’s boss in the air to celebrate a raise. Bodyweight exercises performed on pull-up bars, gymnastics rings, and floor mats bolster strength, flexibility, and coordination. The workouts can be customized to many ages and fitness levels, including absolute beginners, elite athletes, senior citizens, and school-age children. To help clients melt stress while building long, lean muscles, the gym also offers yoga classes for all skill sets.
The more than a dozen brick-and-mortar locations that make up Ultimate Champions Taekwondo Association share not only a style of combat, but a teaching philosophy as well. Tracing the lineage of their combative art back to Grandmaster Sang K. Oh, the instructors adhere to his teachings, exemplified by the quote, "The person who can defeat others with flashy techniques but is without love toward his fellow man will in the end defeat himself." Students use the physical empowerment of mastering jumps, kicks, and weapons to arm themselves with discipline, confidence, concentration, self-respect, and courtesy for others.
Outside of the classroom, the organization reaches out to the tri-state community with ample demonstrations of some of their most exciting techniques. Practitioners soar skyward in flying kicks or fill the air with the whirring blows of nunchakus, bos, and kamas. Fists slam through boards, balloons, and bricks to demonstrate the striking power of tae kwon do and the structural flaws in the Three Little Pigs' panic room.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I am a former college football player who became out of shape and over weight over the last 13 years. At 35 and over weight I needed to make a change in my lifestyle to become healthier. After taking kickboxing classes at a local gym I lost 30 pounds in 6 months. It is the best decision I ever made!
What do you love most about your job?
I love meeting new people who want to make a change in their lifestyle and become healthier. I enjoy teaching Shred Kickboxing classes to our members. My favorite part of the day is after the class when I hear members talking about the results they see after only a month of kickboxing classes.
