What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? We offer dance instruction and performance opportunities for all levels in the styles of Burlesque and Ladies Salsa Styling. What makes us stand apart from the competition is that we provide dancers who have never trained or performed as well as more experienced dancers with the opportunity to be part of a performance company, work with professionals, travel, make friends, gain confidence, get fit, and be part of a truly unique experience! What’s one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans? Just have fun! Everybody learns at their own pace, and we strive to make each class a really fun environment where everyone supports each other's progress. The levels are broken down so that each person gets a little bit of a challenge, but is not overwhelmed. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? Dancing and performing changed my life. I was very shy growing up, and it was dance that broke me out of my shell and made me a more confident, self-assured person… and it also keeps me in great shape. I would see so many women on the dance floor who were too afraid to dance, or didn't know how to move their bodies or be sexy, who would see me perform and wanted to be able to dance like me, but didn't believe they would ever be able to. I wanted to teach them that they can, and to help them experience the same triumphs I have through dance. What do you love most about your job? I love seeing the transformations in my students. Not only physically, but also how they carry themselves and associate with other people. I've had students that were so shy that they stayed in the back of the class and only spoke in almost a whisper become an outgoing dancing and performing diva. This happens time and time again and I never get tired of it.

  • Players Club Golf
Whether navigating Pebble Beach’s oceanside links or exploring the birthplace of golf at St. Andrews in Scotland, golfers know that a little rain can turn a trip of a lifetime into a water-logged disappointment. Players Club Golf removes sogginess from the equation; the center’s three full-screen golf simulators unlock instant access to more than 60 global courses without the hassles of commuting, fickle weather, and long round times. The facility smoothes the oft-difficult road toward better scores with practice configurations that allow players to immediately see a wealth of shot parameters on each swing, including launch angle, ball speed, and carry. The virtual driving range facilitates improvement through repetition and target practice, which also helps when trying to ring the doorbell of a neighbor across the street without getting off the couch. When improvement reaches a plateau, players can enlist the expert instruction of teaching professional Brent Mann. Members also enjoy access to a facility gym stocked with $40,000 worth of equipment. Here, golfers improve their endurance on elliptical machines and strengthen postround handshake grips on a full complement of weight machines.

  • Krav Maga LA
Perhaps the only thing as impressive as Roy Elghanayan’s reign as a two-time Israeli Krav Maga National Champion is the students with whom he’s shared his incredible skill. He first was hand-chosen to devise the Israeli Special Forces’ training program. In 2011, the Argentinean Marines enlisted him to teach the sport to their soldiers. He even trained actress Jessica Chastain for her role in the movie The Debt. Today, he continues to travel the world to teach Krav Maga and works out of his studio, Krav Maga L.A. | REKM. Krav maga is a more rigorous form of self-defense developed by the Israeli military when they realized that ancient martial arts would translate to modern battlefields. Roy and his staff helm classes for both adults and children as part of a six-day schedule that divides students by their skill level. Beginners’ classes corral 18 participants or less so that instructors can easily oversee technique while still having enough bodies to build a human pyramid if morale is low. With continued practice, the instructors at Krav Maga L.A. | REKM hope to imbue their students with the physical and mental skill to escape threatening situations should they ever arise.

  • Let's Ride Venice
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? We offer a variety of electric rentals but also offer standard bikes. There are a lot of options so everyone can find something they enjoy. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? Born out of an interest of fun electric bikes and segways, it grew to the addition of electric skateboards and recent craze, hover boards. With a love of Venice, it only made sense to open a rental place and share the fun in such an amazing place that allows you to ride along the ocean. What do you love most about your job? Meeting a lot of cool people who are looking for a way to maximize their fun in Venice. It's a great area and it's by the beach. It's fun seeing people enjoy the rentals as much as we do. What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? It happens a lot where people come in that want to try one of the rentals but they are very nervous (and excited). When the come back, they are glowing with a big smile across their face. That says a million words!

  • GO Surf LA
Peter Paris has passed his knowledge of surf onto more than 1,500 people, including the hosts for TBS's Weekend Extra and TVNZ's Good Morning New Zealand. His expertise is a product of years travelling California and South America, cutting through thin veils of salty spray on some of the finest waves in the world. Now, as the owner of GO Surf LA, Peter and his team of CPR- and first-aid-certified instructors pass their knowledge onto students of all levels as they teach private surf and standup-paddleboard lessons. All sessions, which incorporate exercises on dry land and stints in the water, can take place at beaches around LA including shorelines in Malibu and Venice. Most beginner sessions stick to Santa Monica beach, though, because of the consistent waves and cotton-candy flavored sand. Peter has also worked to help at-risk youths learn to love surfing at the non-profit Stoked, which named him Volunteer of the Year in 2008.
