  • The Guitar Store
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? The Guitar Store is Seattle's locally owned guitar specialty store filled with a large selection of gear from beginner to professional grade. We will give you great service from a staff of players who want to offer you a chance to have fun. There is a reason people tell friends to shop here. Of the products you sell, which are your favorites? Over 400 effects pedal in stock, the largest selection of products from Fender, Mesa Boogie, Paul Reed Smith, Breedlove, Reverend, Supro, Gretsch, Vox, EVH, and more. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I found myself unemployed in 2010 as the result of slow downs from the Great Recession. A friend suggested that instead of searching for jobs working for "The Man," I open the guitar store I always wanted to go to. My wife Heidi agreed to it and we opened our doors six months later. What do you love most about your job? We offer a place for teachers to meet students for instruction. Every few months teachers offer recitals. There is no better feeling than to see someone start playing an instrument and six months later, play in public for the first time. We have built a community here that is really blooming.

  • The Mike Keeney Guitar School
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? These lessons are more like the "fine dining" of private instruction. Each student is given a custom analysis based on their goals and musical preference. We then carve out a road map for playing the guitar by learning new songs each week based on their interests. Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring? Students need to only bring a guitar! Lesson materials such as sheet music, method books for beginners, and folders will be provided. The studio is stocked with guitar and bass amplifiers. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I love the guitar. From Spanish Classical to Folk to Progressive, I play in many different styles every day. I'm also a people person so it feels like a duty to share my guitar experience and wisdom with the world. I love to play and help people "decode" the mysteries of music while also having fun. What do you love most about your job? To inspire people and help them build more confidence. An absolute beginner can soon feel like a musician. A student who's been playing for thirty years that feels "stuck" can be reinvigorated. We all unite through our love of the music.

  • Seattle Hand Drummers
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? SHD has been going and growing strong since 2010. With over 500 local members and even more worldwide, we have grown to be Seattle's largest drum and music community. Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring? Na'tan will bring with him a small variety of drums from different cultures or you may choose one to focus on. Percussion instruments, clapping, and voice will also be used as instruments. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I've been playing music ever since I was a young child. After touring and playing various instruments in bands and other groups, I fell in love with rhythm. Years ago I attended my first World Rhythm Festival in Seattle and it changed my whole perception on music. What do you love most about your job? What I love most is teaching, but even more so, is sharing. Sharing a joy that I love so much with another that finds as much joy in it as I do. Teaching children is the best. Watching a child's face light up when they learn their first rhythm creates a smile you can't take away.
