Over the past century, Detroit golf courses sprouted up in lockstep with the rapidly expanding automotive industry. Though they originally served as a venue where car-company execs could smoke cigars and sign deals, today the very diverse range of golf courses welcomes a much broader swath of golf enthusiasts. At courses such as
Moose Ridge,
Coyote Preserve, and the municipal St. Clair Shores Golf Club, players enjoy country-club-like conditions while paying public rates. Alternatively, the members-only Detroit Golf Club lets players
practice their swing against a tricky Donald Ross–designed layout.
