This year’s Doo Wop Holiday Reunion show celebrates the 11th congregation of classic rock ‘n’ roll show bands as snappy, rafter-reaching harmonies reverberate through the ace acoustical environs of Consol Energy Center. Eight legendary acts fill the bill, transporting audiences back to a bygone era of sock hops, polka-dot dresses, and barbershops built out of candy canes. Kenny Vance and the Planotones, whose frontman originally charmed audiences as the leader of Jay and the Americans, summon Lovers Lane rendezvouses with their falsetto-laden hit “Looking for an Echo.” Famed all-girl group The Chantels, known for hits such as “Look in My Eyes” and “Maybe,” delight with knockout harmonies that landed them in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
The Duprees celebrate the 50th anniversary of their slow-dance smash “You Belong to Me,” and The Edsels get the entire room singing along to “Rama Lama Ding Dong.” Other veterans filling the doo-wop roster include Herb Cox and the Cleftones, old-school Brooklyn crooners The Capris, and Tommy Mara and the Crests, whose frontman proves why he’s called “the Meatloaf of doo-wop” by rolling in bread crumbs and ketchup.
