We visited for several hours while on a Beach trip to Atlantic Beach. Spent the biggest % of time watching the river otters---just love them. Lots to read & learn about the various creatures living in our State. Both educational & entertaining. Will return again in the future.

About North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores

Within 93,000 square feet, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores manages to fit all of the state's and most of the world's main aquatic environments into five galleries. A 30-foot waterfall throws a cool mist over guests as they begin a journey that brings them to the Piedmont gallery, where the aquarium's three spunky river otters—Neuse, Pungo, and Eno—frolic and play poker underwater. Step into a deep-sea setting to learn how far sea turtles travel and the threats they face, or visit Caretta's Cove—a new digital theater—to meet the charming, chatty loggerhead who answers visitors' questions several times a day. Learn about how loggerhead hatchlings are born on a North Carolina beach and crawl to the ocean and see a real hatchling that’s being rehabilitated at the Aquarium. The Tidal Touch Pool provides offers the opportunity to touch skates, rays, and select invertebrates. At the epicenter lies the ocean gallery, anchored by a 306,000-gallon tank with a 65-foot viewing window. Sand tiger sharks swim around the Living Shipwreck exhibit, a replica of a German U-boat that sank off the United States' East Coast in 1942. Behind the glass of another tank, a young loggerhead sea turtle named Nimbus flashes its gold-toothed smile and rare white coloration. Interactive games will also entertain younger guests.

Divers host live shows twice a day in the ocean tank, responding to customer inquiries via special equipment. They've also been known to assist with proposals, unveiling engagement rings as an unsuspecting fiancé peers through the glass. Beyond overseeing the standing exhibits, the staff also ventures outside for numerous educational programs and activities. Participants can catch crabs, fish in the surf, explore the marsh, take a paddleboarding class, or even explore the water on canoeing and kayaking outings.

My kids (14,11,5) really enjoyed this laid back, but hands on and informative aquarium! We easily spent 5 hours playing around, walking on the path, and interacting with the crew. Unlike the commercialized aquariums we have been to, the kids really learned a lot while we were there.

The aquarium was very peaceful, clean (including restrooms) and organized. The atmosphere was very inviting with a pleasant group of staff. My family drove 2 and 1/2 hrs from where we live and the ride was well worth it...especially for the 7 month old baby and 1 year old. It's indeed a great place for all ages.
