Helmed by Phillip Zavala, a San Antonio native with an exercise-science degree and a passion for instilling healthy habits, Innovative Fitness’s boot camps help exercisers cultivate strength, endurance, and confidence. Held outside at two local parks, each session lets participants admire the bulging biceps of local squirrels while toning their own muscles with a varied mix of body-weight exercises and dumbbell moves. Triceps tighten during one-handed push-ups and other calisthenics, and standing crunches bolster the core and obliques. Heart rates rise as participants jog to stations of weights and imagine being chased by a stampede of angry elephants. With a 25-to-1 student-to-instructor ratio, each boot camp treats students to exercise and nutrition tips while demonstrating Innovative Fitness’s ability to operate a calculator.

In addition to boosting fitness levels, boot camps introduce exercisers who share similar wellness goals, which can lead to other healthy outings such as mall walks and hikes to mountaintop juice bars. Campers should bring a towel, water bottle, and two 5- to 10-pound hand weights to each session.
