The Issue: Life Skills Fostered by Participation in Debate
Debate helps students develop crucial life skills and enhances academic achievement, according to an article in the November 2012 issue of High School Today. Standing up and defending opinions with well-researched arguments can teach youth to distinguish between fact and opinion; strengthen their public-speaking, note-taking, and listening skills; and train them to gather and organize information. Debate also fosters self-confidence, and students who participate in debate are more likely to graduate, meet college-readiness benchmarks, and have a higher GPA relative to comparable peers, according to a 2011 study in Educational Research and Reviews.
The Campaign: Funding Facility Fees for a Debate Tournament
If 45 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Saint Louis Urban Debate League can cover the facility fees for one debate-tournament site. Each additional $10 raised will go toward tournament expenses such as food and supplies for the students. This campaign will support the City Championship, which takes place on March 15 and 16 and features students from nine local high schools competing in a debate tournament. The winning school will attend the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues championship tournament in Washington, DC.
Saint Louis Urban Debate League
Debate is about more than arguing a point. It is about understanding an issue so well that you can coherently defend its merits against an opponent. It requires critical-thinking skills, an understanding of facts and logic, and the ability to perform under pressure. And it can change the trajectory of a student's academic career.
The Saint Louis Urban Debate League helps youth in underserved communities rise to the challenge. Every month, more than 150 students at nine area high schools research a topic of national or international importance and make logical, fact-based arguments for action. Weekend workshops and annual tournaments pit the strongest debaters against each other for the chance to debate in ever more challenging arenas and improve their debating skills. In addition to fostering academic achievement by engaging students in their own learning, the Saint Louis Urban Debate League aims to propel students along the path to college and career success, with the ultimate goal of closing the achievement gap for students from poor or minority backgrounds.
