Q&A with Chase Fishback, Sports Training Manager
Apart from your business's main attraction, do you offer any "hidden" services or activities that visitors are always delighted to learn about?
ASC offers many sports leagues, from youth to adult, such as volleyball, basketball, futsal, dodgeball, and more. ASC also provides camps and clinics for kids to learn and enhance their athletic skills in volleyball, basketball, and strength and conditioning.
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
I've been involved in athletics as a young kid through college, where I started working with kids in multisport camps. I've been fortunate to work with and train people ranging from 5-year-olds to professional athletes in many different sports, and have done so since 2002. After my college football career ended, I've looked forward to every opportunity to help people get healthier and better at their chosen sports.
Have you ever been a patron of your own business? If so, what was the most enjoyable part?
I have been a patron of my own business. Not only do I get to train about 20 staff members in a strength and conditioning program I developed, but I choose to train with them to push them farther than they think they can go.
Kickball. Archery. A nice swim in the lake. As you get older, you sometimes leave the simple pleasures of summer camp behind. Fortunately, the counselors at Camp Our Way are here to make sure you remember. At this all-inclusive, 21+ adults-only sleep-away camp, campers relive the carefree summers of the youth with the perks of adulthood. That means party buses to and from camp, booze instead of bug juice, and deluxe cabins with many of the comforts of home.
Before you pack your rucksack, read on to learn more about this grown-up take on the kids' summer classic:
Start the day right: Daily breakfast buffets ditch the typical camp fare for scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and chilly mimosas. They also serve full-course lunches, s'more roasts, and plenty of other eats and drinks.
Stay active: Just like at kid-size summer camp, your days will be filled with activities; the schedule includes everything from slip 'n' slide parties and dodgeball to hiking and color wars.
Crafts: Want to learn a trade? Check out courses in painting, sculpting, or even organic soap making.
Bust a move at the campfire dance, aided by spirits at the open bar. Other alcohol-friendly activities include flip-cup contests and mixology lessons, where campers learn why a mixture of Coke, Hawaiian Punch, Mountain Dew, and rootbeer doesn't actually taste good.
Though big cities tend to offer a lot of activities for residents, the sheer volume of options can sometimes make it overwhelming to find something fitting. For residents of Austin, the Austin Clan of Everything Social (ACES) makes it easy to find a good time no matter your speed, with social leagues at watering holes and bowling alleys throughout town. On any given night, participants might gather to blow away their highest ping-pong score or grab a mic during a karaoke battle to show off their high note that only dogs can hear. Over the course of a season, members make new friends, bolstering the ACES community while battling for glory with their teammates.
The West Austin Youth Association opens its doors to everyone, regardless of their ability, zip code, or financial status. It hosts a number of youth sports programs that run the gamut from lacrosse to basketball to soccer, as well as camps dedicated to other pastimes, including watching movies, dancing, and conducting science experiments. And each day, they welcome kids to burn off excess energy during open-gym sessions, which are held in the massive gymnasium.
