  • The Body Shop
To call The Body Shop a mere skincare, body care, fragrance, and makeup store is to miss half of what makes it special. Late founder Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer for ethical business practices; upon opening her first store in Brighton, England, in 1976, she developed company values such as Defend human rights and Protect our planet. She somehow balanced principles and profit, partnering in global campaigns with UNICEF, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the United Nations, all while expanding her brand into 2,500 locations in 60 international markets. After her death in 2007, then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, ?She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. . . . She was an inspiration.? Indeed, the Body Shop exhibits an ecofriendliness that's hard to come by in a company of its size. Its products have been fair-trade since 1987, and its Against Animal Testing movement led to a UK-wide ban of animal testing of cosmetics. The products are made from ingredients harvested from around the world: shea butter from Ghana goes into body scrubs and butters, and Indian artisans craft wooden massagers and tote bags that are screen printed by hand. But all that isn't to say the company's production practices overshadow its final products. Skincare treatments, such as the Vitamin E Overnight Serum-In-Oil, often appear in Flare, Chatelaine, Canadian Living, and other national publications.

  • Lash Longer
Lash Longer may as well have a recycling bin at its door to collect all the mascara tubes its clients throw away. After two hours in the stylist's bed, these clients have no more need for it. The stylists diligently go lash by lash, attaching a lush extension to each one. Each extension stays bonded until its native partner falls out with the natural growth cycle. Refill appointments, scheduled every three to four weeks, keep eye fringe lush.

  • The Thymeless Apothecary
Behind the pretty stone façade of The Thymeless Apothecary is a fittingly beautiful collection of bath and beauty products from around the globe. Colourful candles and diffusers line the shelves, filling the air with scents of persimmon and bergamot. Giant jars filled with colourful salts beckon visitors to scoop the fragrant crystals into awaiting bags and create their own relaxing scents. These crystals are then taken home to be used in the bath or scattered on an icy driveway. Thymeless Apothecary’s Alonda Nichols—who spent more than 20 years at the helm of an upscale spa—uses many Thymeless’s products during her facial treatments. Each facial is customized to skin type and can treat issues such as fine lines, acne, or dryness.

  • Kapenzo Hair
Strands of hair have travelled from India, Brazil, Europe, Mongolia, Malaysia, and China to make up Kapenzo Hair's lace wigs. Made from 100% human hair, the wigs provide a natural-looking cover for thinning hair and baldness. In addition to replenishing hair atop barren heads, the salon also replenishes eyelashes by creating fuller, longer lashes with mink extensions. And, without a hint of irony, the salon also removes hair from bodies with waxing services for men and women.
