Boring workouts have no place at CrossFit South Hackensack. Instead, instructors lead conditioning and strength-building classes that routinely change to incorporate new combinations of Olympic lifting techniques, gymnastics, and functional exercises. Students have complete control over each exercise though, and can run, squat, jump, push, and pull with an intensity that safely pushes the limits of their current fitness level. Instructors trust attendees to challenge themselves, but will provide inspiring motivation along the way while fostering a supportive community environment where students are encouraged to help each other by offering words of encouragement or telekinetic weight-lifting assistance.

CrossFit Meadowlands’ head coach, Anthony Rumo, owns black belts in both karate and judo, but, though he has trained in martial arts since age 9, he’s never found any training regimen as demanding and effective as CrossFit. After discovering the system’s benefits while training at an MMA gym in California, he traveled the country learning as much as he could, eventually earning more than five certifications that include CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Strongman, and CPR. Together with coach Frankie Corvelli, named New Jersey's strongest man under 175 pounds, he now leads groups of fitness disciples as they embark upon journeys into the community of CrossFit.
The pair’s 7,000-square-foot facility harbors equipment including 40 yards of AstroTurf, 20-foot ceilings with five climbing ropes, 3,000 pounds of bumper plates, gymnastics rings, and strongman equipment such as sleds, Atlas stones, and tires up to 500 pounds. Students interact with this equipment as they charge through WOD—workouts of the day—which vary constantly but can include weight lifting, cardio training, and body-weight exercises such as pushups, air squats, and dips on suspended rings. Unlike the sack race portion of a job interview, Anthony and Frankie scale their classes for athletes of all ages and fitness levels, resulting in workouts that are universally challenging.
Since its inception in 2000, CrossFit has amassed an army of dedicated participants that include everyone from pro athletes to stay-at-home moms. It's no surprise, then, that one of CrossFit's stated missions is "inclusiveness". Just because it accepts anyone regardless of experience, age, or fitness level doesn't mean it's easy, however. CrossFit Parsippany's array of ropes, truck tires, kettlebells, and cardio equipment await anyone with the willingness to exert themselves and commit to improved health. Inexperienced participants don't have to worry, though; instructors safely scale each Workout of the Day, which draws from sports such as gymnastics and Olympic powerlifting, to suit each individual's physical condition and ability. With continued effort, all participants will see marked improvements in everything from strength and power to balance and stamina, resulting in a better quality of life and the ability to play checkers with barbell plates.
