Exercise is challenging. How do you keep clients motivated and engaged?
The nature of the group helps keep people on task and motivated. Great music and great people keep you engaged in what you're doing, and our coaching staff makes sure that everything you do is safe and appropriate for your fitness level.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
After my professional baseball career ended I realized I could have done much more to keep myself from getting injured and helped my performance. I turned a negative into a positive career change, and I now help people take charge of their lives and fitness.
What do you love most about your job?
I really love helping people get to their goals. Watching their self-confidence improve, and seeing the way they carry themselves when they have learned that they are capable of much more than they originally had thought is the absolute best part of my job.
Justin Thacker, the muscle-bound founder of The Lab Gym, uses the same principles that motivated him through 20 years of weightlifting experience to spur on and cultivate a community of health-conscious exercisers at his modern, glass-walled gym. His team of expert trainers leads guests through group fitness classes that turn bodies into granite sculptures through a series of weightlifting routines and the crystallization of magma. Patrons can coax coy muscles from epidermal hideouts with free weights, dumbbells, squat racks, and an expansive cardio circuit, all accessible to members by keycard 24 hours a day.
For custom guidance, guests can pair up with a personal trainer or can sign up for the structured Laser weight-loss program, a regimen designed to blast off pounds with a laser focus but without actual lasers.
Tom Kavanaugh draws from his personal-training experience to craft a varied workout regimen to push patrons of all skill levels to strengthen and tone their entire bodies. Up to 30 boot campers band together to burn fat and tone physiques outdoors with Tom, moving indoors in the event of inclement weather. Joining in on the calorie burning, Tom throws himself into the high-intensity workouts, performing the strength training, plyometrics, core work, and high-intensity cardio exercises alongside his students rather than barking instructions from the sidelines. After blasting through routines of pushups, sit-ups, and jumping, each Saturday class culminates in up to 15–20 minutes of play time, challenging students to games of dodge ball, kickball, or full-contact checkers.
