When I realized I can actually make a difference in peoples' lives and that I enjoy pampering people. People would walk in unhappy from a bad day, month, or entire life, and leave smiling because I'm very good at what I do, and I listen, I really listen to what you want. I'm just intensely fascinated by people, what they do, and how they look. Perhaps I'm just a nosy person, who knows, but doing hair, well, is never just about doing hair. The creative artistic expression is great too, but to be honest, there [are] few times I really get to cut wild, as it's about what you want, not what I want. If the apocalypse ever comes, what low-maintenance hairstyle would you recommend for the foraging person on-the-go? Just shave it all off—after all, it's only hair. Like seriously, just get rid of it, it's basically a lunch-basket handle at this point. However, if you must have hair to feel feminine or simply yourself (which I totally get) then grow it really long with no layers and weave some fish hooks through it and use it as a weapon like on an old kung fu movie, that's badass beauty. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? I really want to stress that we love you for who you are, it's kind of our slogan. ... We have a bit of an edge to us, but gosh darn are we friendly. I give incredible massages ... I am picky and sometimes appointments will run longer to get things exactly right. I just want people to let me know if they are unhappy, usually it's a quick fix. ... Sometimes it just doesn't work the first time, and it can take several visits to get exactly what you want, especially if you have box dye in your hair.

  • Selfology Spa
At Selfology Spa, the team believes that the beauty of their clients and the beauty of the wilderness shouldn't be at odds. That's why they strive to keep their work eco-friendly. Not only do they subscribe to systems, which encourage creative reuse and recycling, but their sunny white space was designed by the most sustainability-minded design teams around. Those teams both ended up being couples: the Giovannonis made most of the salon furniture, and the Kuwabaras crafted the The Wood River, a custom white-oak bench. The love between the duos suffuses the salon, where clients show themselves love with pampering treatments. These range from purifying and brightening facials to custom haircuts to foot massages, perfect for clients who have tired out their feet doing high-fives wrong. It all feeds into the spa team's philosophy that the world, wilderness and all, is a better place when it's full of healthy, relaxed people.

  • Capelli Salon
Capelli Salon's founder, David Martino, had wanted to open his own shop since childhood, when he diligently swept the floors of his cousin's salon and dreamed of bigger things. It's safe to say that styling is in Martino's DNA; he's the latest in a long line of hairdressers that can be traced back to Italy. It's also safe to say that he inherited his ancestors' precision, as clients routinely remark on his eye for color placement. This same eye also helped Martino choose the venue for his salon. When he and his wife started looking for a space, they knew they wanted natural light and an open feel. Capelli Salon's southwest exposure and 12-foot ceilings certainly fit the bill, making the environment bright, and airy.

  • Pompadours on Denman
The stylists at Pompadours on Denman may wield an arsenal of scissors, clippers, and high-end hairstyling products, but their most valuable tools? Their ears. That's because the team prides itself on listening carefully to clients as they describe the look they're going for, whether that's a bouncy new bob, ombre highlights, or just a regularly scheduled lowering of the ears. The stylists then combine their decades of combined experience with products by A-G, Redken, and American Crew to make the desired haircut a reality. Their services don't end at the follicle, however: clients can also come to Pompadours for facials, nailcare, waxing, and eyelash extensions.
