Yadi Presents “Burlesque is the Word! A Burlesque Tribute to Grease!”
In the world of Grease, drag races rip through the night, gals can apply lipstick in the sheen of their guys’ slicked-back hair, and synchronized song-and-dance numbers erupt from leather-jacketed youth. In their latest tribute, the burlesque artists of Yadi Presents capture these revved up, 1950s images, then amplify the naughty factor in an homage to the classic musical. The risqué show—hosted by one Patrick the Bank Robber—sees cardigans unbuttoning to reveal sequined brassieres and fringe going wild as hips shake off pencil skirts. “Greased Lightning” gets a curvy makeover when a female performer dances to the Travolta-sung hit, causing bowties to spin and every audience member to transform into a howling cartoon wolf. Although many of the showtunes are backed by the musical’s soundtrack, some feature live vocals.<p>
Yadi Presents
Yadi Presents melds traditional burlesque with contemporary source material. Since the company’s inception, performers with names like Ruby Champagne, Angie Cakes and Dolly Danger have conjured titillating, vaudevillian versions of Night of the Living Dead and Grease, and have even taken on the songs of Johnny Cash. Over the course of a single show, cast members shimmy out of their clothes, shake off their autumn leaves, play characters of opposite genders, and pay tribute to pop culture with equal amounts of kitsch and artistry.
