According to North Portland's Dr. Jennifer Rupert, kids who walk and bike to school have higher physical-activity levels throughout the day, which helps them meet the 60 minutes of recommended daily activity, as well as helps prevent childhood obesity, reduce stress, and improve academic performance. As part of its goal to foster health in communities by making bicycling convenient, safe, and accessible, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) hosts education programs that teach bicycle and pedestrian safety for both children and adults. With today's G-Team campaign, a $35 donation gets you an individual membership to the BTA, redeemable online (a $40 value).
The BTA's 10-hour pedestrian-and-bike-safety program includes 5 hours of in-class lessons, plus 5 hours of on-bike training so students can learn to ride safely and legally throughout the neighborhood and to school. In 2010, the BTA brought the program to more than 5,000 fourth–seventh-grade students at 60 Oregon schools, but many schools are unable to participate due to lack of funding.
Join G-Team and donate $10 or $35 to help students learn about the benefits of walking and biking to and from school. If G-Team members raise $300, then the BTA can host a pedestrian-safety program for 20 students at a Portland-area school. All donations will be matched up to $5,000 by Madison's Grill Each additional $30 raised will be used to sponsor an additional two students.
