Project DIY by M&J Trimming
Inside of M&J Trimming’s New York showroom, bolts of lace, yards of feathered fringe, and hundreds of buttons, buckles, and appliqués—a total of more than 100,000 items—fill 5,000 square feet of space. The mammoth selection inspires an afternoon treasure hunt for crafters, seamstresses, designers, and even staffers at haute design houses such as Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, and Vera Wang.
They search through French ribbon, Swiss lace, Italian buttons, and planetary rings, seeking trendy or timeless accents for clothes, furniture, and other sewing projects. While they browse, the staff happily dispenses advice or directs them toward specific items.
M&J Trimming is also the home of Project DIY, a subscription-box service that sends subscribers everything they need to create 2–3 accessories every month. Designers first curate the DIY looks inspired by runway and street-style trends. They then send out the materials to create the looks, including a selection of specialty trims, as well as notions and findings to finish the projects. For complete beginners, they offer starter kits, which include all the basic tools for jewelry-making and step-by-step instructions on how to use them.
