At CrossFit BA, the husband and wife team of Jason and Robin Provencher lead of gym energized by camaraderie and healthy competition. A whiteboard records results as coaches strive for and bring out the best performance in each athlete, leading workouts based on the fundamental movements, Olympic lifts, and innovative body weight resistance. From beginners to triathletes, YWCA Tulsa provides myriad fitness amenities to men and women alike. Members enjoy unlimited visits to a diverse menu of fitness classes, including yoga, barre, Zumba, and Pilates. Friendly instructors also take their jobs to the water, as students wade through free aquatics class in a junior Olympic-sized pool. Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We start off by letting our clients know that we believe in them and that we care about helping them reach their individual goals. With this established from the outset, our students tend to trust us and give their all during workouts. We also tell them that if the workout doesn't challenge them, it definitely won't change them.

What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?

We've seen several over the past 20 years, but one that really sticks out is our client who lost 26 pounds in four weeks, along with 10 percent body fat. My transformation is epic, as well. As an amateur bodybuilder, the judges laughed at me during one of my first competitions. I used that as a catalyst to push me on my path to become a professional bodybuilder. Four years later, I stepped on stage with 3.5 percent body fat and won two professional natural bodybuilding cards. I tell our clients that if they believe in themselves, pray, and relentlessly persevere, they'll reach their fitness goals?no matter how out of shape they are.

Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?

We tell our clients to forget traditional thinking, to understand that we are all unique, and to never give up. We also hope to help others be their physical best so that the benefits of a healthy body can trickle out into other areas of their lives.

A sport and fitness enthusiast his whole life, owner and head trainer Patrick Hallock honed his discipline as a Sergeant in the US Army. Today, he channels his accrued wisdom and experience into CrossFit—a high-intensity, total-body fitness program that draws on techniques from across the athletic spectrum, including track and field, gymnastics, and weightlifting. In his 6,000-square-foot gym, he leads workouts that incorporate functional movements to work all muscle groups, having students flip tractor tires, jump atop plyometric boxes from a standstill, and sling heavy medicine balls into the mouths of ailing giants. Since each exercise features motions from everyday life, such as pushing, pulling, and lifting, it’s a system that can help prepare participants for anything from playing sports to carrying heavy groceries.

With ACSM certification, a degree in health and exercise science, and more than 1,400 track and road races under his belt, Burt McLachlan knows how the body moves. He draws from more than 19 years of training experience to build boot-camp classes at Cross~Stream Fitness, gathering students in a spacious indoor arena for constantly changing routines. His medley of cardio, strength, speed, core, and flexibility drills includes lifting weighted bars, which conditions upper-body muscles, and playing volleyball, which conditions hands to bat away meteors. Burt believes in the power of positive thinking ; he both gives and gathers feedback from his boot-camp groups to plan future classes.
