Safety comes first at New Heights Rock Climbing Gym. Before strapping in at the gym’s top-rope climbing course, all guests have to complete a training lesson that teaches them the skills needed to safely surmount the gym’s walls. Students learn how to tie weight-bearing knots, help friends safely ascend and descend the walls using belaying techniques, and recognize the difference between rocks and Styrofoam coolers that just look like rocks. Once instructors deem them ready, students can then latch onto the colorful rocks sprinkled throughout the climbing space, using their upper-arm strength and path-finding skills to surmount the vertical obstacle course. The angled bouldering course rises over padded mats, allowing guests to safely climb the inclines while working against gravity pulling down their own body weight. The gym opens its doors to parties of all sizes, with one designated instructor for every eight partygoers to ensure climbers stay safe and agile.
After a 15-year professional fighting career, Thomas “Thunderkick” Longacre wanted to bring his unique knowledge and skills back home.
Thomas created Thunderkick Fitness to help his clients build better bodies and to teach pupils his personal fighting style, a blend of tae kwon do and goju-ryu. Students learn a multidimensional approach to fighting, incorporating elements from boxing, wrestling, and kickboxing. The facility hosts cardio kickboxing classes for an up-tempo workout, as well as children’s karate classes that instill discipline and self-confidence. The gym also includes a grappling area with an octagon-style chainlink fence to simulate a professional fighting environment, as well as a forest of swaying heavy bags for students to punch, kick, and use their heat vision on. Thomas draws on his years of experience to provide insights about the mental aspects of the fight game, and he speaks to kids about bully prevention.
For fitness instructors Julie and Kasey, hosting boot-camp classes is a way to pay it forward. Both women experienced the benefits of circuit-style workouts firsthand—they lost weight and reversed their own unhealthy habits—before deciding to help others to do the same. Together, they lead a variety of exercises during 40-minute indoor sessions that encourage participants to get healthy and take control of their life. For added motivation, students can write their wellness goals on the "goal wall," so they can glance at them during trying wall-sits and restorative wall naps. Elastic bands, dumbbells, and stability balls facilitate strength-building maneuvers, and partner exercises boost camaraderie. Julie and Kasey often participate in the routines alongside their clients, maintaining upbeat attitudes and doling out positive reinforcement.
