Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Members stay motivated because Zumba is so much fun. You get a great workout, but since you're having fun, you don't feel like you've worked out for an hour. Our classes are as much a social event as an exercise class. Women make friends and love to get together with them.
What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
I had a member tell me that she went to a concert and danced, something she never would have done before Zumba. She said she felt more comfortable with her body and moving in front of people.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
Zumba classes consist of a warm-up song, 12-14 medium-to-high-energy songs and a cool down. We use a lot of Latin music with salsa, merengue, reggaeton, and other Latin dance to create a workout that's more like a dance party. Students have a great time with friends.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We create an atmosphere where ladies feel comfortable to move their bodies without working out with body builders and hard-core fitness fanatics. Our instructors know everyone's names and make them feel welcome and good about participating.

Name something you don't like about going to the gym, and chances are good that Brickhouse Cardio Club has done something to fix it. For one, members build a personal connection with their instructors, since every instructor is full-time and leads classes at the same time every week. Even before they join, members engage with the staff in a preliminary one-on-one session to go over their health history and determine their fitness goals. Even the studios have been meticulously designed to give women their best workout ever: the specialized hardwood floors are easy on the joints, and powerful sound systems help energize students and drown out the tiny cries of calories burning. The formula has worked well, as the club has established locations in nearly two dozen US states, plus one in Ontario.
A pole, skinny and tall, serves as the workout partner at Altitude Fitness Inc. Adults sculpt their muscles while gripping, posing on, climbing, and spinning around poles during PoleFit classes. Friends can attempt the fete together during bachelorette parties, and kid-friendly circus birthday parties use an aerial hoop that teaches grips, mounts, sits, and dismounts. Other cardio-based classes at the studio include Zumba, hip-hop, and high-intensity interval training.
When Lynette Carter walked into her first Zumba class, she weighed 230 pounds. When she walked into her most recent Zumba class, she weighed 120 pounds, and waved hello to her students. Today, Lynette owns PGR Family Cardio Club, an all-ages fitness facility based around Zumba. She uses her own story of transformation to help motivate and inspire new exercisers. Lynette and her instructors know that each attendee starts at a different level of physical fitness, and so they tailor classes accordingly, even holding special sessions geared towards teaching kids or seniors. "You don't have to be a dancer, or in top ... shape to attend any of our classes," she says. "Just come ready to have fun and burn all the calories away."
Zumba instructor Samantha knows that, despite its fiesta-like façade, Zumba has real effects: she’s lost 35 pounds and toned her muscles since starting the practice. At Dance Integrity, where she teaches her classes, she shares these high-energy, dance-inspired workouts with others. The calorie-torching routines don’t require any previous experience, though participants should make sure that their sneakers aren’t too shy to dance.
The instructors at Fitness Mania Studio love a good party, at least when it comes to their Zumba classes. To create a fiesta-like atmosphere for each, they pump international tunes and dress a full-body workout in the guise of high-energy choreography—much of which is inspired by Latin dance. Each session welcomes students of all experience levels, creating a fun, supportive environment.
