The food was great, the service was prompt, and the price was reasonable. The ambiance was perfect for a romantic date as well.

We enjoy dining out and La Cote Basque is our favorite destination. Try their mussels.

What You'll Get

The Cinderella of the culinary world, French cuisine proves that with enough creams and sauces even the potato can become the belle of the ball. Celebrate the apotheosis of the root vegetable with today's Groupon: $10 for $25 worth of French cuisine and drinks at La Cote Basque. The charming, family-owned, and robot-operated Gulfport restaurant has been plating fine fare for more than 30 years.

After arriving at the cozy, unprepossessing eatery, skate a bulbous shrimp across cocktail sauce ($9.50) or extend stomach muscles with garlic-wine-sauced mussels ($7.95) for starters. Soups include staples such as French onion ($6.95), chilled creamy potato and leek ($6.95), and decadent Swiss cheese ($7.95). All entrees are served with three veggies, a starch, baked bread, and salad. From grilled grouper ($18.95) to lamb chops ($23.95), the menu services all carnivorous cravings. Wash down the well-rounded meals with house wines available by the liter, half liter, and glass. Prices are modest and start at $3.95 for a glass of sangria, burgundy, lambrusco, white zinfandel, or Chablis. Beer and cocktails are also available.

La Cote Basque offers an incentive for early birds in the form of its daily-special menu, which offers select dishes at a discounted price between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Housed in the second-oldest building in the area, the quaint cottage setting (red-clothed, dressed tables; moody lamps; and fresh flowers) has the charm of a hidden antique store and the serene calmness of a shack in the woods inhabited by an escaped princess on the run from her crazed step-aunt.

Metromix Tampa Bay, Gayot, the Tampa Tribune, and the Tampa Bay Restaurant Guide recommend La Cote Basque:

  • This restaurant, snuggled into a residential side-city to St. Petersburg, has been serving consistently fine French food for nearly 30 years. Locals have fond memories of intimate, romantic (read: dark) meals here where the menu is limited but reliable and the service is equally embracing. – Gayot
  • There's the intimate, baroque flair of La Cote Basque Winehouse, a family-owned French restaurant which has won numerous awards during its 36 years for such dishes as veal crepes, escargots de bourguisnonne and Jager Schnitzel . – Jeff Houck, Tampa Tribune
  • Enjoy an array of tantalizing French inspired dishes at this elegant restaurant which features home baked French bread and a variety of house wines that include Burgundy, Chablis, Zinfandel, and Premium French Bordeaux...The restaurant is relaxed, with creative table settings creative [sic] and a cozy feeling. – Tampa Bay Restaurant Guide
  • The friendly and knowledgable [sic] staff, the unusual and intimate designs, and all the aforementioned qualities should give even the most discriminating diner a reason to come and enjoy the fruits of La Cote Basque. – Metromix Tampa Bay

TripAdvisors give La Cote Basque an average of 3.5 owl eyes, and three Citysearchers also give a 3.5-star average:

  • I'm not sure wiener schnitzel is French, but this stuff is great. Also had the filet mignon which was outstanding. Service is outstanding. – plhfl, Citysearch
  • They have several veal dishes, each of them superb. Our preference is usually wiener schnitzel and or veal piccata, however everything is excellent. All meals come with several vegetables and a starch, again each item is delicous [sic]. – barbaradixon, TripAdvisor

About La Cote Basque

An old world union of shiny red tablecloths, wall murals, and rustic wooden accents forms the backdrop for La Cote Basque's chefs, who harness traditional European recipes to imbue their menu with classic French, Italian, and German flavors. Complex flavor combinations tastily define La Cote Basque’s menu. The restaurant’s palate-popular chefs enlist sherry to sauté shrimp, fresh mushrooms, and peppers before recruiting brandy to flambé the entire concoction while a sunny-side-up egg adorns schnitzel holstein, a breaded veal cutlet served with anchovies and capers. Like friendship bracelets traded by butchers, the medallions senater assorties encompasses six different meats, including beef marsala, veal piccata, and chicken parmesan. House wines, such as chianti and sangria, complement the international-dining experience.
