The charming, family-owned, and robot-operated Gulfport restaurant has been plating fine fare for more than 30 years.
After arriving at the cozy, unprepossessing eatery, skate a bulbous shrimp across cocktail sauce ($9.50) or extend stomach muscles with garlic-wine-sauced mussels ($7.95) for starters. Soups include staples such as French onion ($6.95), chilled creamy potato and leek ($6.95), and decadent Swiss cheese ($7.95). All entrees are served with three veggies, a starch, baked bread, and salad. From grilled grouper ($18.95) to lamb chops ($23.95), the menu services all carnivorous cravings. Wash down the well-rounded meals with house wines available by the liter, half liter, and glass. Prices are modest and start at $3.95 for a glass of sangria, burgundy, lambrusco, white zinfandel, or Chablis. Beer and cocktails are also available.
La Cote Basque offers an incentive for early birds in the form of its daily-special menu, which offers select dishes at a discounted price between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Housed in the second-oldest building in the area, the quaint cottage setting (red-clothed, dressed tables; moody lamps; and fresh flowers) has the charm of a hidden antique store and the serene calmness of a shack in the woods inhabited by an escaped princess on the run from her crazed step-aunt.
